Ronda Rousey Memes Take Over Internet After Shocking UFC 193 Upset

Former UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion Ronda Rousey is proving that the only thing people love more than a winner is a meme-worthy loser. Within hours of what’s being dubbed “The Stunner Down Under”, a slew of memes hit the internet.

It’s not really surprising.

Ronda Rousey has, as her undefeated streak grew, become something of a controversial MMA figure. While some appreciated the 28-year-old former champ as the supposedly most dominant female champion in history, others felt that (1) she was bad for the competitive nature of female MMA fighting and (2) her arrogance was unwarranted, as her previous challengers represented little threat to her championship aspirations.

After 34-year-old Holm KO’d Rousey in the second round (following what was likely the first round lost by Ronda in her entire career), the Internet lost it. Memes poured online in the immediate aftermath of UFC193.

There were the ones that, of course, made fun of the manner in which Ronda got “rocked.”

If you were happy to see Ronda Rousey finally lose, and lose via knockout, then the above probably seems pretty funny. It triggers the “Schadenfreude” nerve when someone painted as “the most dominant” gets utterly dominated and indisputably defeated. Jokes aside, how many people saw this outcome coming?

In addition to the numerous memes tweeted about the actual knockout, more than a few MMA fans recalled an interview Ronda Rousey gave weeks ago. During her interview with Jimmy, Ronda virtually laid out Holly’s game plan. The only difference between her prediction and the event was that (Sorry, Rousey!) it went down exactly “like that.”

Perhaps the most poignant aspect of the interview is it suggests that Ronda failed to take Holly seriously. It’s one thing to know an opponent’s likely attack plans — it’s something else entirely to know and still fall victim in the Octagon. Was it because Rousey failed to prepare adequately? Was it because Ronda didn’t anticipate the speed and skill Holly has? It’s hard to say, but the “prediction” certainly made for quite a few memes.

In addition to “kekeing” it up over the KO and having predicted her own demise, Ronda Rousey found herself mocked when the approach to her opponent took a noticeably nasty turn following their weigh-in. According to the UK’s Mirror, Ronda decided that Holly was “fake” nice, which supposedly justified her blatantly disrespectful behavior toward the now champion.

“Fake a** cheap shotting fake respect fake humility b**** — ‘preacher’s daughter’ my a**’ — I see through your fake sweet act now — you’re getting your a** kicked tomorrow, and I’m really going to enjoy the beating I give you #andSTILL”

The bragging and trash talk may have helped pump Ronda up ahead of her UFC193 bout, but it made her look especially terrible in retrospect. That and refusing to touch gloves with Holly right before their fight. It was similar to the contempt shown to long-time rival Meisha Tate. The difference is that Holly Holm didn’t seem to have done anything to deserve to be treated in such a way.

It’s clear that Rousey is a very emotional person who doesn’t take perceived disrespect lightly. However, Holly hasn’t publicly disrespected her in the same way — however Ronda perceived Holly’s treatment of herself. That Holm was a humble and graceful winner makes Rousey look especially bad.

Rousey has yet to speak publicly about her loss, and observers on the internet seem to think it’s typical of Rousey: someone who talks trash about an opponent she assumes she can easily beat, who then crawls away to hide from owning her loss. In actuality, Ronda Rousey went to the hospital immediately after the fight.

Unfortunately for Ronda and her reputation, the internet really doesn’t seem to care about that tidbit. Rousey’s being mercilessly trolled about her comment and subsequent loss on Instagram.

Speaking of memes and merciless trolling, it’s of little surprise that bitter Rousey rivals Meisha Tate and “Cyborg” Justino were more than satisfied with last night’s outcome. Justino got in on the meme game herself following the upset.

The laughter and memes will sting a bit, but it’s probably a minuscule sensation compared to Ronda Rousey waking up to the realization she’s no longer the champion. Humbled by a KO (and ruthless internet memes), the question now is how — or if — Ronda Rousey can bounce back from this in the inevitable rematch.
