Katy Perry Wanted For ‘Clueless’ Musical: Maybe Robert Pattinson And FKA Twigs Could Join Her

Katy Perry may soon be singing about surfing the crimson wave if Clueless director and screenwriter Amy Heckerling gets her way. According to Heckerling, Perry is her top choice to star in the Clueless Broadway musical that’s currently in the works.

As Us Weekly points out, Katy Perry is already one of the most popular “California Gurls” around, so it’s not hard to see why Heckerling is hoping to convince the pop princess to trade her peppermint bra for a plaid schoolgirl skirt and a pen with a pink poof on the end.

Alicia Silverstone played the spoiled but sweet Cali rich girl, Cher Horowitz, in the 1995 movie, which doesn’t include much singing besides Tai’s (Brittany Murphy) memorable performance of Coolio’s “Rollin’ With My Homies.” However, the movie featured the soundtrack of the ’90s for many a teen girl, and “Teenage Dream” singer Katy Perry could probably do a few of the movie’s tunes justice if they were included in the Clueless musical — just imagine Katy belting out “Supermodel” while she gives Tai a makeover. Fun fact: “Supermodel” singer Jill Sobule also sang a song titled, “I Kissed a Girl.”

Unfortunately, casting Katy Perry as the biggest betty of the ’90s isn’t as easy as throwing a blonde wig on her and asking her to practice her “as ifs.” Amy Heckerling told Vulture that she’s very aware that the singer has a hectic schedule, so it might prove to be impossible to cast Katy Perry as the “hymenally challenged” Valley girl who is saving herself for Luke Perry.

“I love Katy Perry,” Heckerling said. “But you never know what will happen, she has a whole big schedule. It was like I love it, I wish I could do it.”

Heckerling revealed that the Clueless musical won’t just be “karaoke to the movie,” so it will definitely feature never-before-heard songs. Rock of Ages‘s Kristin Hanggi has signed on to direct the musical, and Heckerling hopes that Clueless fans will be rocking their best Calvin Klein slip dresses to showings of the musical sometime next year.

If Katy Perry does get cast in the musical, she’ll need to find some castmates who aren’t members of Taylor Swift’s squad. Taylor is the Amber to Katy’s Cher, so obviously no member of Swift’s clique can simultaneously star in the musical. Heckerling is looking at performers who have appeared in musicals before for some of the show’s roles, but perhaps Katy Perry could fill two key parts by convincing one of her famous friends and his girlfriend to give Broadway a shot.

According to the New York Daily News, Katy recently proved that she and Robert Pattinson are still good pals. Katy was photographed with Pattinson and his bride-to-be, FKA Twigs, at the eighth-annual GO Campaign Gala in Beverly Hills. Robert Pattinson can sing and act, so perhaps he’d be interested in giving Broadway a try by appearing in the Clueless musical. He’s always had a James Dean thing going on, so he’d be perfect for the part of Christian, the good-looking gay guy Cher falls for who looks like he just stepped out of the 1950s.

FKA Twigs hasn’t done much acting, but she can sing and dance. She has a nose piercing and an edgy sense of style, so perhaps she’d make the perfect Dionne in the Clueless musical. Katy Perry also has done very little acting, so starring in a stage musical would be a learning experience for both young women. Perry’s acting credits include guest-starring roles on the TV series Raising Hope and How I Met Your Mother, and she also voiced Smurfette in the Smurfs movies.
