‘Smash’ Wii U, 3DS Characters Welcome Cloud From ‘Final Fantasy VII’ — What Other Characters Should We See?

Super Smash Bros. on Wii U and 3DS has a new character coming, according to the latest Nintendo Direct announcement. It seems Nintendo is embracing the idea of DLC as a viable way of getting gamers to hand over their money.

DLC has become a mainstream way of adding to most games these days, which gamers either love or hate. Some companies like Ubisoft and Warner Bros. tend to sell playable characters and stages which may or may not add anything to the game itself. Others use the concept to give you the option of unlocking parts of the game faster, like in Mortal Kombat X. The latest Super Smash Bros., or Super Smash Bros. 4 as some might call it, is using the idea as a way to add more characters to the roster.

IGN reports the latest addition to the Smash Wii U and 3DS’ characters was revealed to be Cloud from Final Fantasy VII, a character which has a lot of the game’s owners excited about who’s next for the roster. Originally a PlayStation game made by Square, FF7 has been considered one of the greatest role playing games ever created.

The idea of Cloud, the main protagonist of FF7, being added to the list of Smash Wii U and 3DS characters is almost ironic. PlayStation was a console originally intended to be the Nintendo CD, but Nintendo turned down Sony’s offer and created one of their own biggest rivals. Other DLC characters have included Ryu from Street Fighter, as well as Mega Man, both Capcom properties, so now the possibilities seem endless.

Another possible future addition (if it proves popular) is a female version of Link, which has been named Linkle. Many in the gaming community have argued that Nintendo could have made more of an effort with the name, possibly calling her Linkette. Her methods of attack center on twin crossbows and a spin kick, replacing her male counterpart’s sword and bow attacks. Linkle makes her debut in Hyrule Warriors, the latest original Zelda project for Wii U.

Non-Nintendo additions appear to be up for the future of the Smash Wii U and 3DS character roster now, so we might even see the return of Solid Snake to the franchise. Even though the departure of Hideo Kojima from Konami has dampened the future of Metal Gear, some fans would still love to see Solid Snake return, if not his father, the focus on the series’ recent years.

Luke Skywalker would be a Star Wars fan’s dream come true going up against Mario and the gang. Wielding a light saber and Force attacks would work well in a fighting environment, possibly even throwing items picked up from a distance. His super attack could be a stage strafing from his X-Wing.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles could also benefit the roster of Super Smash Bros. Wii U and 3DS characters. Like Luke Skywalker above, they aren’t console exclusive characters, so Microsoft and Sony can’t keep them out. Leonardo or Michelangelo are the additions players might want most, using ninja weapons and “mousers” for regular attacks.

Billy and Jimmy Lee from Double Dragon might also work, as well as the Battletoads. Some X-Men, Avengers, or the Fantastic Four might be possible as well. As long as Microsoft and Sony don’t own the licenses, new characters could come from surprising places.

Even major side characters like Barret and Tifa from FF7, Raiden from Metal Gear Solid 2, Darth Vader, or even Darth Maul may be added later on. Plenty of minor characters from Nintendo’s licenses are there, so it’s possible.

Who would you like to see as future additions for Smash Wii U and 3DS characters?
