Madonna And Mariah Carey Top New ‘Billboard’ Rankings And Get Insults Thrown Their Way

Billboard just came out with their #GreatestofAllTime lists and, as expected, Madonna and Mariah Carey (along with the Beatles) are ruling the lists. These artists represent how far female artists have come over the past 30 years. However, the comments about their achievements, perhaps, represent how much female artists still need to go in overcoming sexism and ageism.

First, let’s start with Madonna. She is the highest-ranking individual artist of all time when it comes to the music charts and ranks No. 2 when it comes to all artists and groups — the Beatles are No. 1. It’s important to note that the Beatles were around 20 years before Madonna had her first hit, so they were able to get quite a head start.

When it comes to artists with the most top 10 hits in music history, Madonna easily rules the list. Billboard talks about Madonna’s huge achievement.

“Madonna paces the rundown of artists with the most top 10 Hot 100 hits, with 38. She and the Beatles, who last reached the region with reunion single ‘Free as a Bird’ in 1995, were tied with 34 until Madonna notched her 35th, ‘Die Another Day,’ in 2002. She scored her 38th and most recent top 10 with ‘Give Me All Your Luvin’ (featuring Nicki Minaj and M.I.A.) in 2012.”

Not everybody is happy with Madonna’s achievements, though. In the comments section, GaysAgainstJenner makes some far-out allegations.

“Madonna is white, ugly, and old. Because of her white privilege, she never had to work hard to achieve anything like Janet Jackson or Rihanna. She and her friend Katy Perry are also racists.”

And while a lot of people on Twitter were congratulating Madonna, others weren’t.

Then, there is Mariah Carey. She has been having a rough time over the past couple of years, but nobody can deny her chart queen status. On Billboard’s list of the artists with the most No. 1 singles, Carey is second to the Beatles. Carey topped the charts 18 times. Her last No. 1 song was “Touch My Body” from 2008. There are some who don’t like Mariah and are pretty vocal about it.

“Mariah Carey needs to be taken off that list since she discounted all her big hits to 49 cents. She also slept her way to the top by marrying the head of Sony records. She is fat and ugly and needs to stop heating so many burritos,” claims commenter Paul Cenerros after the article on Billboard.

Some on Twitter were pretty vocal against Mariah Carey.

Both Mariah Carey and Madonna are still active. Madonna is currently performing in Europe on her “Rebel Heart Tour.” In less than two months, Madonna has already grossed over $46 million. Even though Mariah has done just about as many shows as Madonna, she has only grossed $10 million — but that’s still impressive for somebody who hasn’t had a hit in years.
