Maggie Gyllenhaal Named Daughter After Patti Smith Song

Maggie Gyllenhaal has revealed the source of her newborn daughter Gloria’s name: a Patti Smith cover of the Van Morrison hit ‘Gloria’.

Gyllenhaal said she and her actor husband, Peter Sarsgaard, fell in love with the rocker’s rendition of the song, which was originally recorded by Van Morrison and his band Them. Speaking to Jimmy Fallon, the 34-year-old actress revealed the child’s name had been picked out long before she even got pregnant:

“We thought of her name when we were at this concert that Patti Smith played at and she played ‘Gloria,’ and it was a couple of years ago and we thought, ‘We’ll name our daughter that one day.'”

Gloria made her arrival in April, and is Gyllenhaal and Sarsgaard’s second daughter. Their first, Ramona, is now five years old.

Yet the actress is picky about which covers of the Van Morrison song she listens to:

“My husband played me The Doors’ version of ‘Gloria’ two days after my daughter was born and it was so dirty, I couldn’t handle it. It was a super, super dirty version! Van Morison has an awesome version, which is the one Patti Smith is covering, but she does hers totally her own (way).”

Gyllenhaal and Sarsgaard wed in 2009.
