Xbox One Backwards Compatibility List Revealed, Round Two More Exciting With ‘Black Ops’

The first 104 Xbox 360 titles made backwards compatible with the Xbox One were announced Monday and some highly anticipated titles such as Red Dead Redemption are missing. The list does include a mix of AAA titles and Xbox Live Arcade titles, but it appears to be saving some of the bigger names until the second release of backwards compatible titles planned for December.

The Xbox One will add backwards compatibility support for the Xbox 360 as part of the New Xbox One Experience update on Thursday, November 12. As expected, the initial list of backwards compatible titles for the Xbox One includes all of the Gears of War games, Mass Effect, Fallout 3, Rainbow Six: Vegas, and the Viva Pinata titles. It also includes Mirror’s Edge, Assassin’s Creed II, Borderlands, and Beyond Good & Evil HD.

The backwards compatibility list is not full of AAA titles, though, and some Xbox community members have already expressed disappointment on forums like Reddit and NeoGAF. Many of the top requested titles from the Xbox User Voice program are missing, such as Red Dead Redemption, Call of Duty: Black Ops II, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, and Halo: Reach.

The good news is this is just the first round of backwards compatible games being added to the Xbox One, and the December update will add several top requested titles. Halo: Reach, Halo Wars, Call of Duty: Black Ops, Bioshock, Bioshock 2, Bioshock Infinite, and Skate 3 are all slated for the next update.

The December list of titles also bodes well because it confirms that Activision and 2K Games are on board with Xbox One backwards compatibility push. That means there is hope to see more Call of Duty titles as well as Red Dead Redemption.

As the Inquisitr previously covered, Xbox One manages backwards compatibility by emulating the entire Xbox 360 operating system. This allows Xbox 360 games to run on the Xbox One without any special coding or other workarounds. The major hurdle that is left is licensing agreements with the development studios and publishers to allow the games to be played on the Xbox One and listed for sale on the Xbox Store for the console.

Additionally, all Xbox Games with Gold titles will be backwards compatible for the Xbox One. November’s games start with Dirt 3, which is available as a free download through November 15. Meanwhile, Dungeon Siege III will become a free download on November 16.
