‘The Flash’ Producer Andrew Kreisberg Discusses Cisco Ramon’s Future As A Metahuman, Gorilla Grodd, And King Shark

The Flash season 1 was all about the setup. Dr. Harrison Wells’ particle accelerator exploded, thus being the CW explanation of how The Flash came to be. Season 1 slowly introduced the titular character, his nemesis, and of course a few metahumans along the way. Fair warning for any reader who haven’t started this season, spoilers abound. The Flash season 2 is still dealing with metahumans, but now from Earth-2, which was connected to Earth-1 through the singularity The Flash created defeating Reverse-Flash.

Zoom, the season 2 big bad, has been hurling metahumans through the “52” different singularities that now exist. King Shark was one of the latest, which might have seemed kind-of random, Comicbook reports that producer Andrew Kreisberg explains the one and done, singular appearance.

“King Shark came from…we actually put him in the comic book adaptation because we said, ‘No one’s every going to let us do this, and we’re never going to be able to do this,’ since we weren’t going to be using the Squad anymore. We were talking about it and it was really Todd Helbing who was just like, ‘Yeah, let’s do it.’ It was a very expensive thirty seconds of the show. Our visual effects team are the best and they really love challenges like this. We’re like, ‘Can we do King Shark?’ Armen Kevorkian, who is the head of our team, got so excited. It was probably the thing that he sent me the most, ‘Check it out. Here’s how it’s coming.’ I literally can’t believe that. That’s beyond feature quality. They realize it so well.”

King Shark has made a few appearances through DC Comics in the multiverse prior to Flashpoint. Shark started as Superboy villain, but has also has appeared opposite Aquaman as well. He was a planned part of the Suicide Squad at one point, but there is no direction on whether he will or will not at this time. Though there still is the Gorrilla Grodd and Caitlyn Snow “King Kong” episode to come, at this time, there is nothing planned for King Shark in The Flash season 2. Kreisberg seems to indicate that King Shark might simply be special appearance, due to the budget.

“It was just fun for us, because obviously we can’t afford to do an entire King Shark episode, so the idea that he’s one of Zoom’s minions. He said, ‘Zoom sent me here to kill you.’ He’s just the latest in another line, which does mean that there is a King Shark on Earth-1, now that we’ve designed him.”

The Flash season 2 is full of DC Comics metahumans galore, but Cisco Ramon has still yet to become the character he has been reported to be, Vibe. For those following season 2, he has been having flashes of his powers, but it was only at Earth-2 Harrison Wells and Barry Allen’s urging did he utilize his powers intentionally. Cisco Ramon has lamented that the Reverse-Flash gave him the power, so it must be evil, or for an evil purpose. The Flash producer Andrew Kreisberg put those fears to rest.

“He doesn’t see what the benefit is yet. He doesn’t see that it really is a gift and he doesn’t see that it is a blessing and a power that can be used to help people. Right now, all he sees is the nightmare. That’s what’s really scary for him.”

Carlos Valdes, who plays Cisco Ramon, does not even know if he will become Vibe or almost anything at all.

“All I know is that we’re really hinting at some stuff from the Vibe lore, so things look good. I haven’t heard anything. I don’t even know if that’s in my future, so I don’t like to make assumptions.”

The Flash fans will just have to keep watching season 2 to find out whether or not Cisco Ramon becomes Vibe, or whether Andrew Kreisberg is truthful about King Shark’s one-shot appearance.
