“‘There were a few days when we thought [a working honeymoon] wasn’t the best idea,”‘ laughs Jolie, who wrote, directed, produced and co-starred with Pitt in the low-budget domestic drama. ‘There were days during filming last year when we were really worried and it was hard.'”

The gorgeous actress and director went on to explain the lesson it taught her and Pitt, also relaying how the tough circumstance allowed them both to see that they would work through their issues no matter what storm they’re weathering.

“If we had married and were just starting a relationship it would have been a disaster, but because we have been together so long we wanted to see how far we could push our relationship and our love and see if we can work together under very intense circumstances and with very complex issues and see if it would make us better. But at the end we came out of it thinking, ‘This was the best honeymoon,’ because the film says, ‘Whatever you go through, weather the storm and stick together. So it was kind of a message to each other that we are going to stick together whatever comes.”

As the Telegraph noted, the film — in which both Pitt and Jolie star, entitled By the Sea — was inspired by well-known European art films of the ’60s and ’70s such as Jules et Jim and Breathless. It tells the story of a former dancer battling depression while coping with her novelist husband, who is, additionally, a heavy drinker. Jolie plays the role of Vanessa while Pitt plays the role of her difficult husband. The characters’ marriage is in crisis when they arrive at the seaside town set in France during the ’70s. The film’s focus is the working through the marital issues and the characters, “coming to terms with unresolved issues in their lives.”

Jolie shares that the film is not autobiographical in the slightest, despite the rumors that have been churning about the difficulties she and Pitt have faced. The star relays that she has high hopes for the film affecting her audience in a way that each viewer can take something away from the film that they can apply to their own journey.

“I want people to walk away with different things from this film. Audiences will interpret it in a hundred different ways and it’s intended to be like that.”

“Brad and I have our issues, but if the characters were even remotely close to our problems we couldn’t have made the film. To be clear: we have fights and problems like any other couple. We have days when we drive each other absolutely mad and want space, but the problems in the movie aren’t our specific problems.”
