Nicki Minaj is among the most popular female hip hop artists in the world. Presently, a series based on her life has been given the go-ahead by the ABC network, with a casting call already out for aspiring actors with a resemblance to the “Anaconda” singer. Born in Trinidad and Tobago, Nicki Minaj was raised there by her grandmother for a few years as her parents left for America to seek a better life while she was just 5. Eventually, her mother came back for her. This is how she describes the instance she landed in the United States as reported by MTV.
“I thought it was gonna be like a castle. Like white picket fence, like a fairy tale. I got off the plane and it was cold. I remember the smell. I could always remember the smell when I got out of the airport of the snow, and I had never seen snow. I remember the house. I remember that the furniture wasn’t put down. It was, like, piled up on each other, and I didn’t understand why, ’cause I thought it was gonna look like a big castle.”
Living in a foreign country and having an abusive father soon proved to be a lot to handle. Nicki’s father, a drug addict at the time, was always arguing with her mother and yelling. Apparently, he started doing crack shortly after moving to the United States, which made it hard for him to keep a job, and without a job, he was soon forced to steal, even from his own family. Watching the relationship between her parents, Minaj and her siblings always lived in fear that her physically abusive and violent father would one day kill her mother.
On one occasion, Nicki’s mother narrowly escaped death after her father burned down the house at night. However, it just so happened that she had a premonition about the incident the night before and had sent Nicki and her big brother to spend the night at her friend’s house.
Luckily, Nicki Minaj’s mother escaped from the house before the fire engulfed everything. Nicki was also bullied as a child, but strived to show them that she wasn’t a pushover, sometimes asking her older brother to meet her after school if she felt there would be a physical confrontation, adding, ” Sometimes there’d be a fight, sometimes not. I let people know I wasn’t going to be pushed around. What it came down to is that the bullies wanted me to bow down to them. And I just wouldn’t.”
It is during times like this that Nicki Minaj sought refuge in creating alter-egos (assume characters in her mind) that would help her face the difficult reality. She would later create some for her albums. For example, for her album Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, Nicki Minaj said that it was mainly done by her alter-ego – Roman Zolanski. This is according to Papermag.
That said, it is her strong persona and rise to fame that has inspired a new yet to be tagged series by ABC. According to Backstage, it will be set in Nicki Minaj’s early years. Currently, the hunt for an actress able to depict Nicki in her early years is on, and a casting call has been made for talented actors to apply and hopefully be called to audition. According to Backstage, interested actors should be from the East Coast and be able to act out a “feisty, funny, and proud,” Nicki Minaj character. The call has inspired a large number of fans to post audition pictures on social media. The following are some of the amazing and hilarious Nicki Minaj lookalike attempts.
