Rey Mysterio & Konnan Discuss Alberto Del Rio’s Return To WWE, Possible Future With AAA

Rey Mysterio was the featured guest on the 200th episode of MLW Radio featuring Konnan and former WWE writer Court Bauer. Rey discussed his current work in Mexico and said he is in great health at the moment. He discussed a number of topics regarding his career in the squared circle, including the return of his longtime fan Alberto Del Rio to WWE.

Rey noted that he spoke with Del Rio shortly before his big return at WWE’s Hell in a Cell event, sharing that the wrestler was enthusiastic about returning to wrestling’s biggest of big leagues.

“I spoke to him on Monday, I spoke to him over the weekend while I was in Europe. He sounded very excited and he told me what he was going to do — this is actually Saturday, the day before the pay per view — and he has the utmost respect from me because he took the time to call me to let me know what he wanted to do… That speaks highly of him. He is a true professional.”

As previously reported by the Inquisitr and other news outlets, Alberto Del Rio made a surprise return to WWE during the above-noted pay-per-view event in late October when he answered an open challenge from John Cena. Del Rio defeated Cena without any shenanigans to become the new United States champion.

Del Rio mended fences with WWE after an ugly event with one of the company’s staffers sent him packing earlier this year. The Mexican-born superstar has reportedly signed a lucrative six-figure contract with the sports entertainment company. During his sabbatical from WWE, Del Rio made appearances in Lucha Underground and Ring of Honor. He also won AAA’s Mega Champion strap and currently holds that title despite the fact that he is under contract with WWE. It is an unusual position for the company, who typically requires that their talent work exclusively for WWE.

While many have speculated that WWE will compel Alberto Del Rio to surrender the title without losing, MLW host Konnan, who currently works in AAA, said that he does not believe WWE will necessarily require Del Rio to abruptly part with AAA.

“When he spoke to [WWE], one of the things that he said was, ‘When you closed the door, [AAA ]opened the door for me. I don’t want to leave them hanging like that.’ That’s honorable, bro. So, he wants to come back … I was in kind of a quagmire because it was like, everybody knows if he comes back, he’s dropping the belt. So, I was almost thinking of doing something else but basically they (WWE) don’t want him to drop the belt anyway. They’re like, ‘You came here as a champion. Look at they way you won. You’re going to leave with the title.'”

A recent report from WrestleZone indicates that AAA has postponed television tapings involving Del Rio so they can work out the situation between the wrestling companies.

Konnan said that Del Rio personally told him that WWE sent 10 scouts into the field to look for new and marketable Mexican talent but that nobody measured up to the standard set by ADR.

Konnan and Court Bauer expressed some concern that Alberto Del Rio’s pairing with Zeb Coulter seems a bit forced at the moment. They also noted that it is an encouraging sign that WWE is aggressively marketing Del Rio merchandise, indicating that the company appears committed to promoting Mexican-American talent and garnering a stronger following from Hispanic wrestling fans.
