National Cat Day: It’s Time To Celebrate Your Beloved And Grumpy Cats [Photos, Videos]

It’s National Cat Day, Oct. 29. The time of year when we celebrate our favorite and most beloved felines and, yes, even grumpy cats. National Cat Day was founded in 2005 by American Pet and Family Lifestyle Expert Colleen Paige. Paige has also launched National Dog Day, National Mutt Dog, Black Dog Day, National Kitten Day, and more, but enough of that. Today is the day to marvel and behold the wonders that are our four-pawed feline friends. As part of the holiday, Paige shares a list of 20 ways to help celebrate on the official National Cat Day website. First and foremost is to adopt or rescue a cat in need from a reputable shelter. Other ways to celebrate include donating needed items to a shelter, making something special for your cat, having a professional pet photography session, dressing up in cat makeup and costumes, and sharing adorable photos of your beloved cats on social media networks. Of all the ways to celebrate, none is more important than rescuing and adopting cats that are in need of forever homes.

National Cat Day works in conjunction with the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). In honor of the holiday, the ASPCA has teamed up with I Can Has Cheezburger and Uber for their annual UberKITTENS event. Uber drivers will deliver cute, cuddly kittens looking for forever homes to offices in participating areas. The program hopes to find new homes for cats who desperately need them. The ASPCA hopes the event helps not only find new homes for the participating kitties, but also create awareness that there are millions of cats nationwide looking for forever homes or in need of rescue. The Uber Kittens event is a great way to remind people how much cats need our love, care, and affection. Additionally, the UberKittens events remind people what a wonderful addition cats make to the home.

There is also an official National Cat Day Facebook page, where pet owners can find recent news, headlines, and cat health information, as well as an official Instagram page full of wonderful cat photos and videos.

National Cat Day is about saving cats from abuse, neglect and harm and showing love to the cats we have chosen to share our homes with. Cats have been domesticated for thousands of years, and experts believe they were first domesticated in ancient Egypt. There has always been something mythical about cats, and though the Egyptians revered them, it seems they have never lost their regality. Even the lowliest of housecats will try to convince you of his or her royal privilege, and every cat owner and dog knows who truly runs the house. Cats have been a wonderful companion to humans for thousands of years, and there is no better time than to give them the recognition they deserve than on National Cat Day.
