Melissa Benoist’s Nude Photos Leaked By Fappening Hackers Are Like Porn — CBS Supergirl’s Sex Life Haunts Role Model Focus?

When Melissa Benoist’s nude photos were leaked by the Fappening in 2014, there was not nearly as much outrage in comparison to what happened to Jennifer Lawrence, Kate Upton, and other famous actresses. But now that Benoist is known as CBS’ Supergirl, you have to wonder how those porn-like photos may haunt her acting career since she is trying to portray the Supergirl character as a role model for girls and other women.

In a related report by the Inquisitr, when 2016 GOP presidential candidate Jeb Bush called Melissa Benoist “hot” in answer to a question about his favorite superhero, the response from the Supergirl actress was fairly awkward.

In 2014, the world was shocked when the Fappening hackers leaked hundreds, if not thousands, of photos and videos stolen from the smartphones of famous celebrities from Apple’s iCloud storage system. The only good result out of that messy situation was that Reddit and other networks began cracking down on celebrity porn photos and other leaked data by changing their privacy policies.

American police tried tracking down the Fappening hackers, but an August report from the Mirror claims they were never found. The FBI did seize the computers of a man named Emilio Herrera, but he apparently was never arrested or served prison time.

Unfortunately, to this day, it is still ridiculously easy for children to find the Fappening photos if they know how to disable Google’s SafeSearch feature (you would think Google might try hiding the turn-off switch in a buried options menu). These photos are no longer hiding on dark web forums and secret chats — they are on websites that still somehow remain standing despite all the uproar last year. Finding a particular type of smut is not even hard since the websites even index the names of the female celebrities in lists.

Among the items leaked by the Fappening are Melissa Benoist’s nude photos. What sets them apart from the others is that she is not simply taking photos while in the changing room or bored in her underwear. Instead, Benoist is seen posing for the camera in very sexually explicit porn-like poses while having sex, which leave absolutely nothing to the imagination.

At the time, Benoist was mostly known for her role as Marley on Glee. You might expect Benoist to be fairly irked when she discovered the intrusion into her private sex life, but all she did was relate the leak to a TED talk about clickbait news.

“My sentiments exactly, on so many levels, @sallykohn …incivility should not be supported. Please watch,” Melissa tweeted at the time.

Other Glee actresses were almost gleeful about the leak. When Becaa Tobin’s nude photos were discovered among the lists, all she did was tweet, “Merry XXXmas!” Glee actress Lea Michele was more circumspect when her own private photos were leaked, apparently choosing to silently ignore any controversy.

CBS’ Supergirl Actress a Positive Role Model?

The main issue with these past photos is that Melissa Benoist’s Supergirl character is supposed to represent a role model.

“I want to do right by women,” Benoist said in recent interviews. “I want to portray someone they can relate to and look up to that’s not a trite or a shallow depiction. I want her to be complicated and flawed. I guess I just want all women to feel like they could be Kara and Superwoman as well.”

In order to provide a squeeky clean role model, you would assume the network would have chosen an actress with zero potential issues in her history. Many an aspiring actress will take on a nude or sexually explicit role in order to break into Hollywood, and it’s not like Benoist wanted people to see her private photos, but why invite controversy at all?

The first time audiences saw Melissa Benoist naked was when she posed topless while interviewing for a position in a powerful Muslim’s harem on the Showtime series Homeland. Otherwise, Benoist has not done any sex scenes, and even when she did Miley Cyrus’ Wrecking Ball on Glee, she remained clothed.

Considering how CBS’ Supergirl character intends on serving as a positive role model for girls, it is probably best that Melissa Benoist’s sex scenes remain off-screen and in private for the foreseeable future. After all, it’s not just the on-screen action which counts, it’s also what Benoist represents off-screen which can become associated with the DC icon. Dark and gritty superheroes may be all the rage right now, but that is not what we want to see with the Supergirl series, nor should young girls associate such things in their minds.
