‘Deadpool’ Will Feature A More Faithful Colossus

Since the Deadpool movie shifted into production, there has been plenty of speculation as to which X-Men characters will turn up in the movie. One of the characters already confirmed to make an appearance is metal-skinned mutant, Colossus. In an interview this week, the actor playing the character, Andre Tricoteux, confirmed that the role will be very faithful to the comic version of the character.

Speaking to Tech Times, Tricoteux had some very revealing words about the incoming Deadpool movie, a film that is expected to alter the landscape of superhero movies from family-friendly fare to more adult, mature content. Speaking of his character, Tricoteux revealed the following.

“The Colossus you’re going to see in Deadpool is very true to the original character in the comic book. Tim Miller had a really clear vision, and the Deadpool people had a really clear vision of what they wanted. They wanted Colossus to be very traditional to the original story. We kept it very traditional to the comic book. Actually, we kept it exactly like the comic book, so you could be able to derive your own conclusion from that.”

The origin story weaves the tale of Piotr Rasputin, a young boy living amongst a Soviet collective, whose powers are first revealed when he rescues his sister from a runaway tractor. Details of how this plays into the Deadpool movie is currently under wraps, but expect it to put him in direct conflict with the titular character at some point.

Tricoteux, who stands at a whopping 6-foot-10-inches tall, spoke candidly about his incarnation of the character. Colossus has already featured in the X-Men franchise, making several appearances in the films between 2000 and 2014, but many fans were disappointed with his representation. Tricoteux quickly eased the worries, revealing that the character will be more traditional to the source material, a decision made by the film-makers, and that he is more than familiar with Colossus’ comic book roots.

“Yeah, I think you’re going to get to see more of who Colossus is. Like I said, we kept him really traditional to the comic book. So yes, I think people will get a better sense of who he is. But I think there’s still a lot more to be told about him. Colossus has been around in the comics since the ’70s, so I mean, I think you could do your own movie on him. Yeah, you’re going to get to see a little bit more of who he is and kind of his outlook on the world.”

“I was pretty familiar with the character, but actually, one of my brothers is a comic fanatic, and Colossus was actually his favourite character, so he was kind of my go-to guy when I needed some quick information. But I was familiar with the character, and I definitely studied up on him when I knew I got the role.”

Finally, he had nothing but kind things to say about his co-star, Ryan Reynolds. Well, kind of…

“I think there’s a lot of similarities between Ryan and Deadpool, so I think they just naturally blended into each other.”

If that is true, then we should see a fairly authentic Deadpool come February. Needless to say, Reynolds was always the one and only choice — in the fans’ eyes, anyway — to play the Merc with a Mouth, and it seems he is about to deliver with no restrictions. Yes, Deadpool will be rated R for mature content, fan-pleasing news that was revealed by Entertainment Weekly in July.

With Deadpool garnering a rated R classification, it will be interesting to see what other X-Men appear on the rumour mill. Wolverine is the firm favourite; his love/hate relationship with Deadpool has provided some hilarious comic book moments over the years. Writer/producer Simon Kinberg has already confirmed the movie will crossover with X-Men: Apocalypse and Gambit, news reported by the Inquisitr earlier year, so expect to see some familiar names for the film or its sequel, which is currently in development.

Colossus showed his smarts in the Deadpool trailer, exhibiting his trademark strength when he punches the title character into a sedan. Knowing of Deadpool’s tumultuous relationship with the X-Men members, he probably did something to deserve it. The Merc with a Mouth certainly knows how to test even the most patient of mutants, and hopefully Colossus is just one of those vying for Deadpool’s attention.

Will more X-Men feature in the movie? We shall find out when Deadpool hits theatres on February 12, 2016.
