‘The Secret Life Of The American Teenager’ Creator Brenda Hampton Reveals What Happened Following Cliffhanger Finale

The Secret Life of the American Teenager came to an end two years ago, leaving fans with a cliffhanger finale. We witnessed Amy (Shailene Woodley), the protagonist of the show, leave her son John (Matthew and Joseph Levinson) and Ricky (Daren Kagasoff), John’s dad, to go to college in New York. Millions of fans cried as Ricky read John a bedtime story in the final scene that read “And she lived happily ever after. And so will we.”

Fans never got to know what happened to Amy, or if she and Ricky made it work despite the distance between them. What about Amy’s on-again off-again love interest, Ben? What happened to him? Did Jack and Grace ever get back together? Did Adrian and Omar live happily ever after? These are all questions fans have been stewing over for years. However, The Secret Life of the American Teenager creator Brenda Hampton recently revealed to MTV News exactly what happened to each of the popular characters.

First off, Brenda revealed that Amy never came back from New York. Rather, after a couple of years, Ricky and John moved to New York to be closer to Amy, along with Amy’s dad and John’s grandfather, George.

“That’s right, Grandpa George, Ricky and John all in an apartment in Brooklyn Heights, all so Amy could be with John more often while getting her degree,” Hampton told MTV.“But they were a safe distance away over the Brooklyn Bridge, and she remained in the dorm for a few years.”

With the help of Leo, Ben’s father, Ricky was able to transfer to a different college to finish his degree. With everyone else gone, Leo packs up and moves to Brooklyn Heights, too. Amy and Ricky fall in love with New York and each other all over again. After they both graduated from college, they got married.

“And where is Amy’s mom? Happily married herself and traveling the world singing in jazz clubs. And Ricky’s mom? She moved across the hall with George. Why not? They were great together,” Hampton explained.

Amy and Ben realized that they were in love, but only as friends. After numerous times of being together romantically, they went their separate ways. Ben then went on to college, where he wrote his first novel, a bestseller based on Amy. He continued to write while pursuing a doctorate in literature.

So, how did Ricky explain to John why his mommy suddenly went away?

“Ricky explained that sometimes the daddy stays with the children while the mommy goes to college or works,” Hampton said. “But Amy really didn’t just disappear, she made a great effort to get back to John as much as possible, and Ricky took him to New York whenever he could before moving there.”

Grace, Hamton said, went on to attend medical school at NYU. Jack and Madison got married, and followed the others to New York. Madison found success on Broadway while Jack, with help from Leo, became a coach at St. Francis. And what about Adrian and Omar?

“Adrian and Omar are very happily married and perhaps the most successful financially out of the group. He continues to revolutionize education, and she is finishing law school, and they have two of the cutest kids ever!”

While fans would love to see The Secret Life of the American Teenager come back to television, Hampton said that probably will never happen. She said Amy has become too successful now in her acting career to want to come back to the teenage drama, and she doesn’t think the fans would want to continue the show without Amy’s character.

“Because this is the reality of producing a long-running series, it’s very difficult to keep all the actors together over the years. Hey, it’s difficult to keep fans as well!” Hampton said. “So I want to thank all the fans who watched us for five seasons and for still caring what happens to Ricky and Amy and everyone in The Secret Life of the American Teenager family.”
