Lionel Richie took to Twitter and Instagram to send a cheeky message to Adele after a mashup video of their two songs, both titled “Hello,” went viral. The hilarious video shows clips from Lionel Richie’s and Adele’s music videos of the same name, but it seems that Adele hangs up on Richie, leaving him hanging. Richie decided to take a tongue-in-cheek attitude about the similarities of their two songs. Rolling Stone wrote about the similarities, stating that the two songs, “share more than just the same title: Both tracks feature sparse piano, lyrics dripping with yearning and pained vocals,” not to mention that both Richie and Adele use phones in their videos. Lionel Richie sent the message via both Instagram and Twitter with photos of him and Adele side by side with the message, “Hello @adele is it me you’re looking for…”

Richie’s “Hello” is over 30 years old, and is about his unrequited love for the object of his desires. He hasn’t told her how he feels, instead he sings a song about it. Adele’s “Hello” is more about lost love; she is trying to make up with the person whose heart she broke. Richie sings, “And in my dreams I’ve kissed your lips a thousand times.” Adele sings, “I must have called a thousand times.” Lionel Richie’s song, “Hello,” was one of his more successful songs, reaching number one on the charts. Adele’s “Hello” will most likely become a top hit as well.

It seems that Richie is used to his hit, “Hello,” being made fun of. Last year in a Rolling Stone interview, Richie was asked if he ever got tired of the song being spoofed. Richie replied, “No. You’ve got to spoof it.”

“Even I go back and look at it and go, “Really? Did I work on having hair like that?”

The 66-year-old Lionel Richie is still going strong today, he is currently getting ready to go back on his All The Hits All Night Long tour, which starts in March of next year. Earlier this evening, Richie performed at the ACL Live in Austin, Texas. Lionel has been doing this tour since June of 2013. His performance in Austin tonight was his last one this year. On March 13 of next year, he will finish up his Hits tour in Durbin, South Africa. Lionel is far from finished; however, in April of next year he will start a residency of his Hits show at the AXIS at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas.

Lionel Richie is excited about his upcoming residency in Vegas, Richie said last month, “I’m so excited to begin my residency at Planet Hollywood.”

“I can’t wait to share ‘All the Hits, All Night Long’ with all of my fans – it’s a high-energy show that is a perfect match for such a vibrant city!”

Richie’s residency in Vegas will include 20 dates in April/May and September/October of 2016 and will be called Lionel Richie: All the Hits. Richie is also going to be honored at the Grammys in 2016 as Musicares Person of the Year.

Perhaps Richie and Adele will get together in the near future and perform a “Hello” mashup duet. Too bad Glee isn’t on anymore because that would be the perfect platform for such a mashup. Richie should definitely invite Adele to perform with him, or Adele could ask Richie to perform with her. Either way it would be one smashup mashup, don’t you think?

Do you think Lionel Richie’s “Hello” song is better than Adele’s? Watch the videos below and you can decide for yourself. Feel free to leave a comment below.
