Drake Hoping To Star In Action Movies? ‘Hotline Bling’ Rapper Reveals Future Acting Plans

Drake may be spending the remainder of 2015 working on his highly anticipated studio album, Views From the 6, but it appears Drake is also planning on returning to his acting roots in the near future.

Drake first rose to fame for his acting role as Jimmy Brooks on the highly popular Canadian television show, Degrassi: The Next Generation, before ultimately quitting the series in 2009 after Drake’s character graduated from Degrassi High School.

With Drake having recently expressed his desire to get back into acting, this time in major film roles rather than television, fans have already begun speculating about which type of movie Drake would be most likely to star in given his history with Degrassi.

TMZ caught up Drake while the “Hotline Bling” rapper was exiting a nightclub in West Hollywood on Friday in order to ask Drake what type of film he could see himself acting in for the future.

When asked if he would be more interested in being an action film star or comedy star, Drake flashes a smile before revealing, “I’m all across the board.”

“Have you ever played Monopoly and won? I’m all across the board man.”

Drake may be open to starring in a variety of film genres, but it looks like Drake won’t have to choose between his music and his hopes of resurrecting his acting career.

In a recent interview with W for the magazine’s biannual art edition, Drake reflects on his days in Degrassi before admitting that the show’s producers forced him to choose between music and acting.

“That was part of the reason I was kicked off the show,” Drake explains of his struggle to juggle both his budding rap career and his dedication to the long-running Canadian television series.

Drake explains that he would spend an entire day on the set of Degrassi for filming obligations before heading to the studio to record new music until the early hours of the morning.

Drake further notes that when the show’s producers began to realize that he was juggling two demanding professions, they asked him to choose between Degrassi and his rap career, with Drake clearly having chosen the latter option.

While Drake admits that his music remains his “focal point,” Drake is adamant about wanting to resurrect his acting career and hopefully take on some larger acting roles on the big screen.

Despite Drake’s comments about being kicked off of Degrassi, a producer for the Canadian teen soap opera admits that Drake was never asked to choose between his music and the show.

Speaking to Buzzfeed News just hours after Drake’s interview appeared online, Degrassi co-creator and executive producer Linda Schuyler admits that not only was the Degrassi team encouraging of Drake’s rap career, they helped to work around his busy schedule.

Similarly, Schuyler notes that Drake ultimately left Degrassi because his character “had run its course” and not because Drake was presented with an ultimatum regarding his music and his role in the series.

Despite the miscommunication regarding Drake’s time on the series, it appears there’s no bad blood between Drake and the rest of the Degrassi family.

In fact, Drake made headlines in August after he reunited with his former Degrassi costars for an epic reunion photo.

Drake flew to his native Toronto in order to attend the premiere of the new web series, We Are Disorderly, and support his former Degrassi stars Mazin Elsadig and Al Mukadam.

During the premiere, Drake posed for a sweet photo with his close friends and costars Lauren Collins, Adamo Ruggiero, and Daniel Clark, who portrayed Paige, Marco, and Sean on Degrassi: The Next Generation, respectively.
