Already planning what you will do with your big windfall if you win the October 16 Mega Millions jackpot? Before booking that luxury vacation or start shopping for your dream car, Forbes has a few suggestions for lottery players who hit it big, including these important tips.

  • Assemble a team of legal and financial advisers, including a tax professional before you cash in your winning ticket.
  • Pay off all your debts before you buy a luxury item.
  • Review your estate plan and take steps to protect your assets.

How much will you take home if you beat the one in 258,890,850 odds and win the $84 million jackpot on Friday night? Winners have the choice of taking home a lump sum payment based on the cash value of the jackpot ($52.7 million) or having it paid out in 30 installments over 29 years.

According to Forbes, that’s where a tax professional comes in to play. Before lottery officials issue a lump sum check, approximately 25 percent will be withheld for federal taxes. State taxes will also be deducted from the prize amount if you live in a state that taxes lottery winnings. Jackpot winners who choose a 30-year annuity will get the entire $84 million jackpot with taxes withheld on each annual payment.

“People who have trouble controlling their spending might prefer the discipline of receiving the money as an annuity. But this payout form has other drawbacks… you will want to compare the effective yield of the annuity with what you could earn by taking the money as a lump sum, paying the taxes and investing the proceeds.”

According to USA Megas Powerball jackpot analysis, a single winner would take home $39,525,000 after federal taxes and before state taxes. If the winner chooses the annuity option, they would receive approximate annual payments of $2,800,000 per year.
