Upcoming ‘Star Wars’ E-Books Explain New Character Backstories Ahead Of ‘The Force Awakens’

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is set for a December release. But as soon as next month, Star Wars fans will get to know new characters before they are introduced in the film. At New York Comic Con this past weekend, the Star Wars panel revealed a flurry of new information, including new Star Wars story prequels set to prepare fans for the upcoming film.

The Journey to The Force Awakens panel announced that between November of 2015 and Summer of 2017, new books were coming that would tie in with the new story and characters from The Force Awakens. Potential covers and titles for the new books were shown to guests during the panel. Marvel also talked about releasing a new comics series focusing on a story taking place during the 10 years between Episode I and II, set to come out in January, 2016.

An e-book anthology consisting of several books will be released focusing on the backstory of aliens that will appear in The Force Awakens. The books will come in the Star Wars: Tales From A Galaxy Far, Far Away: Aliens anthology. The anthology will consist of several books, each with a backstory on an individual from a new race of alien. Not all of the titles in the series have been announced, but the ones that were revealed include “High Noon on Jakku,” “All Creatures Great and Small,” “The Face of Evil,” and “The Crimson Corsair and the Treasure of Count Dooku.” The stories will first appear electronically this year, and then a print version of the collection will come out in April, 2017.

As Vanity Fair reports, new character Bazine, first spotted in behind-the-scenes footage, already has moviegoers curious. The Star Wars people will have a new e-book out soon to satisfy the itch. Bazine will get an e-book titled The Perfect Weapon. The new story will arrive as early as next month. She’s a thick eyebrowed, leather clad, jester-like character. She appears to be working with pirate Maz Kanata, the character played by award-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o. It’s unclear at the present time whether Bazine will remain a background character or have a larger role when the Star Wars film arrives.

'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' Movie Coming Soon

Besides another e-book called Bait, about a character nobody knows, called Grumgarr, coming out in December, there will be a book released in 2016 called Star Wars: New Republic: Bloodline. This book should give a broader overview of events leading up to The Force Awakens, as it is set about six years before the events of the film.

A book that has already been released, Star Wars: Aftermath, will receive two new sequels for 2016 and 2017, respectively. The trilogy is written by Chuck Wendig. He’ll release Star Wars: Aftermath: Life Debt, and Star Wars: Aftermath: Empire’s End in subsequent summers. The trilogy details the tumultuous events taking place after Star Wars: Return of the Jedi.

The new Marvel series will focus on Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker. Star Wars: Obi-Wan and Anakin will follow the release of Marvel’s other current character-focused Star Wars comic series, Star Wars: Chewbacca.

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy stated the difference between the Star Wars saga films and the upcoming anthology film spin-offs, as reported by ABC. The main films, the saga films, connect into the previous Star Wars films and continue the story, focusing on the Skywalker family. The anthology films that will be released in between each saga film will take things in a different direction, focusing on new themes, new settings, and different characters.

But little information is available about the new member of the Skywalker family, rumored to be the daughter of Han Solo and Leia. She may have a major role in the next Star Wars films.
