Lamar Odom Takes Herbal Viagra At Nevada Brothel, Ends Up Unresponsive, Hospitalized

After taking a handful of herbal Viagra, two-time NBA champion Lamar Odom was found unresponsive at a brothel outside of Las Vegas on Tuesday.

As reported by the New York Daily News, the brothel owner claims that Odom took “upwards of ten” herbal Viagra pills. Soon after, the staff at the Love Ranch found Odom unresponsive and motionless on the floor, save for vomiting and foaming at the mouth. Odom was taken to Desert View Hospital in Pahrump to deal with problem potentially caused by the herbal Viagra, but he was then taken 60 miles by ambulance to the Sunrise Hospital in Las Vegas.

While no information has been given about the specific brand of herbal Viagra taken, or exactly how much of the Viagra was taken, this specific “pseudo-drug” is not the same thing as the prescription Viagra you get from the pharmacy. The varieties of herbal Viagra available on the market are just some of many non-prescription sexual-enhancement supplements that the United States Food and Drug Administration warn against.

It has not been confirmed at this time that the herbal Viagra was, indeed, the cause of Odom’s health issues.

The unapproved herbal Viagra may show up in products at truck stops or convenience stores with names like “King of Romance,” “Stiff Nights,” and other, more provocative labels. They can also be purchased easily online. As NBC News reports, the FDA tries to go after makers of these supposed Viagra substitutes, because they often have the active ingredient from Viagra (sildenafil) or one very similar (sulfoaildenafil). It is illegal to use prescription drugs in over-the-counter supplements, but the fact that the ingredients remain unlisted is dangerous. Some of the unlisted ingredients in herbal Viagra and the like may have harmful side effects when mixed with other medications, prescription or otherwise.

Despite being unproven and unavailable at any sort of legitimate pharmacy, products like this herbal Viagra ring up more $400 million each year. If it was the pseudo-Viagra that caused Odom’s unresponsiveness, many others may be at risk as well. It’s hard for the FDA to keep up with the producers. While they maintain a list of products that they know are unsafe, makers can easily change the name of their products and the websites they operate from. The fact that the FDA doesn’t have to approve products like the herbal Viagra Odom reportedly took means the manufacturers are under considerably fewer regulations and safety standards.

After hearing about Odom’s crazy night that included a brothel, herbal Viagra, and an ambulance ride, many of those close to him reached out for support. Ex-wife and reality television star Khloe Kardashian made the trip to Las Vegas to visit Odom, TMZ reported, as did Kim Kardashian and Kris Jenner. When Kylie received news of Odom’s condition after his night with herbal Viagra, she immediately ended the live stream that was in process on her website and app.

While not all of Odom’s former teammates and NBA cohorts could visit him in person while recovering from the possible herbal Viagra overdose, they showed solidarity in their well-wishes and prayers, even if expressed via Twitter.

According to the most recent reports from USA Today, Odom remains unconscious in the hospital, and Khloe remains there with him.

While the FDA does not recommend any non-prescription sexual enhancement supplements, if you have concerns about a product you purchased, their list contains all known tainted herbal Viagra products.
