There hasn’t been a Mega Millions jackpot winner since September 11 when one lucky ticket holder in New York won $106 million by matching the numbers 5-11-31-50-67. According to the Lohud Journal, the winning ticket was sold at Patel’s Grocery and Convenience Store in Yonkers, New York. The winner has one year to come forward to claim the prize.
This isn’t the first time someone in New York won a Mega Millions jackpot prize this year. Harold Diamond of Wurtsboro won $326 million in January, followed by South Fallsburg resident Tammy Pratt, who won $126 million on February 27. According to the New York Post, 16 co-workers at a New York pharmaceutical company split $58 million just four weeks after Pratt picked up her winning check.
How much will you take home if you beat the 1 in 258,890,850 odds and win the $75 million jackpot on Tuesday night?
If the winner chooses a one-time cash payment, it would be based on the cash value of the jackpot — $46.6 million. According to USA Mega‘s Powerball jackpot analysis, if the jackpot winner chooses to take a one-time lump-sum payment, the prize amount would be subject to federal taxes.
A deduction of approximately 25 percent for federal taxes would leave the winner with approximately $34,950,000. All but nine states tax lottery winnings, so unless you live in California, Delaware, Florida, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, or Wyoming, expect to have state taxes deducted before the check is issued.
There is also an option to spread the payments out over 30 years if the winner selects the annuity option. The winner would receive 30 average annual payments based on the $75 million jackpot. That equates to 30 payments of $2.5 million each before federal and state taxes.
If you are not lucky enough to win the Mega Millions jackpot tonight, there’s a 1 in 14.7 chance that you will win a non-jackpot prize. Although no one won the jackpot in the last drawing, there were over one million ticket holders who won a prize ranging from $1 for matching just the Mega Ball to $1 million for matching five white balls but not the Mega Ball.
If you have tickets from previous drawings that weren’t grand prize winners, check to make sure you don’t have a non-jackpot winning ticket before you throw it away. Here are the winning numbers for the last five drawings.
October 9: 9, 21, 63, 75, 14 MB 4
October 6: 17, 58, 63, 64, 66 MB 13
October 2: 4, 14, 29, 31, 47 MB 9

Mega Millions tickets are sold at lottery retailers in 44 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Tickets cost $1 each and drawings take place every Tuesday and Friday night at 11 p.m. ET. Lottery players can pay an additional $1 for the Megaplier option which multiplies the amount of the non-jackpot prize between two and five times.
