Kanye West may not be running for political office just yet, but the “Gold Digger” rapper already tried to secure three hard-to-come-by votes last week.
In a surprise appearance during the San Francisco auditions, West hit the American Idol stage trying to earn a golden ticket for the show’s initial rounds of competition. In the process, Kanye got more than a vote of confidence out of judge Jennifer Lopez, Vanity Fair reported Monday.
West was accompanied by wife Kim Kardashian for the surprise happening. Kim captured the moment and posted a screenshot of the audition to her Instagram account.
Kanye performed what is probably his most recognizable song in “Gold Digger” featuring Jamie Foxx. West turned the tune, which headlined his sophomore album Late Registration, into a No. 1 single in 2004.
Lyrics in the song praised American Idol judge Jennifer Lopez. When Kanye reached the portion of the song, Lopez was singing along with West.
“But I’m looking for the one, Have you seen her? My psychic told me she have an a** like Serena, Trina, Jennifer Lopez, four kids…”

West was smiling throughout the entire performance, and the video released on Twitter has the sounds of laughter from wife Kim in the background. After the performance, Kanye comes out the iconic American Idol double doors to produce a golden ticket, showing it off to his wife and host Ryan Seacrest, a video posted to the American Idol Instagram account showed.
Prior to this season, American Idol announced that this would be the last year for the record-breaking show, according to a May USA Today report. The Fox TV series has produced numerous top artists, including Kelly Clarkson, Adam Lambert, and Carrie Underwood.
Ryan Seacrest, who has a full plate in addition to American Idol hosting responsibilities, is still looking for his next hit show. This summer’s offering with Knock, Knock Live will not be it, as the show was cancelled after the second episode aired due to its poor ratings.
It’s not clear yet if this was an off-the-cuff stunt planned by Kanye West or a marketing effort by American Idol. Rolling Stone recently reported that the show wanted to make the final run a “season-long celebratory event,” and celebrity auditions could be a part of that plan.
Kanye West was in town because of a performance for a San Diego Democratic National Committee fundraiser Saturday. Kanye, who announced his intentions to run for president in 2020 during a rambling speech at the MTV Video Music Awards in August, has been the punchline of several jokes ever since.
Most recently, Kanye West received a good-nature ribbing by President Barack Obama over the weekend at the San Diego fundraiser, the Inquisitr previously reported. Spurring West to put his name in the ring for the soon-to-be vacant Speaker of the House position, Barack told a self-deprecating joke that rang true for both he and Kanye.
“Do you really think this country is going to elect a black guy from the south side of Chicago with a funny name to be president of the United States? That is crazy.”
Kim also has garnered her fair share of attention recently. Using her Instagram account, Kardashian-West posted racy pictures from an early summer photo shoot to increase attention to her new app and website. Kim also posted photos of her bare body to dispel her pregnancy naysayers.
