Debra Messing Files to Divorce Daniel Zelman

Actress Debra Messing has officially filed for divorce from her husband of 10 years, Daniel Zelman.

The sad news should come as no surprise to those who have been following the Will & Grace star’s life as Messing announced her separation from Zelman in December of last year, then opened up about the split to Ladies’ Home Journal magazine this May.

Debra said of the break-up at the time:

“Twenty years. It’s a very long time. I think the institute of marriage is a noble thing. The idea of a partner for life is incredibly romantic. But now we’re living to 100. A hundred years ago people were dying at age 37. Till death do us part was a much different deal.”

According to the court documents filed on Tuesday, the 43-year-old actress seeks joint custody of their 8-year-old son Roman, and is asking for spousal and child support, TMZ reported.

Messing, who met Zelman in 1990 and tied the knot with the screenwriter in September of 2000, cited “irreconcilable differences” as the reason behind the divorce.

Radar Online reports Messing has also hired high-profile attorney Neal Hersh, whose notable celeb clients have included Camille Grammer, Halle Berry and Melissa Etheridge.

Since the split, Debra Messing has been linked to her Smash co-star Will Chase, who is also going through a divorce.

Coincidentally, Messing and Chase’s characters on Smash have also been having an affair and their spouses leave them once they find out.
