Shopping for a new or used car? Many car dealerships will be open on Columbus Day, but Edmunds offers some great tips on getting a good deal on a car. Consumer Advice Editor Philip Reed suggests that you arrive early in the day on Monday to test drive the car before the dealership gets busy. Even more important than getting in an early test drive is to do research on the car you are buying so you are prepared to negotiate.

Need a bite to eat while you’re out shopping? Most chain restaurants, including Applebee’s, TGI Fridays, Cracker Barrel, Ruby Tuesdays, Outback Steakhouse, Longhorn Steakhouse, Buca di Bepo, Red Robin, and Olive Garden will be open throughout the holiday weekend. With just six weeks to go before Black Friday, consumers may be wondering if it’s worth hitting up the Columbus Day sales this weekend. There are some things worth buying and other items, especially electronics, that you should wait until late November to buy when the holiday shopping season kicks off.

According to Deal News, shoes, boots, sneakers, and accessories will be a great buy this weekend, but if you want to buy clothing (coats, jeans, sweaters), wait until Black Friday when retailers will mark apparel down as much as 54 percent.

If you’re in the market for a new TV, laptop or tablet, it’s best to wait until Black Friday or Cyber Monday to buy electronics. Deals News states that the only Columbus Day electronics deal worth checking out is a 55-inch HDTV with off-brand TVs priced around $400 and brand name TVs close to $570 at major retailers like Best Buy, Target, and Walmart.

Although Columbus Day is a big day for sales, keep in mind that while most retailers, restaurants, grocery stores, and movie theaters will be open on Monday, it is a federal holiday so most government offices will be closed. The U.S. Postal Service, IRS, and Social Security offices will not be open on Monday, October 12 and will reopen on Tuesday, October 13.
