Selena Gomez Reveals She Underwent Chemotherapy For Lupus, Sought Counseling After Fat-Shaming Comments

Selena Gomez is set on making a comeback with her Revival album. The 22-year-old singer sat down for a revealing interview with Billboard magazine.

Selena Gomez is gracing the cover of Billboard’s latest issue. The “Good For You” singer dons an oversized white tuxedo with black piping. Gomez also wears her signature dark hair around her face. Sure, Gomez’s cover is striking, but her interview is where it gets candid. The former Disney star opens up about the time she took off after her Stars Dance World Tour.

Rumors circulated that Selena went to rehab for substance abuse. She told the entertainment magazine that she’s been through chemotherapy for lupus.

“I was diagnosed with lupus, and I’ve been through chemotherapy. That’s what my break was really about. I could’ve had a stroke. I wanted to badly say, ‘You guys have no idea. I’m in chemotherapy. You’re a**holes.’ I locked myself away until I was confident and comfortable again.”

Selena Gomez had to cancel the remaining dates of her world tour because she needed to recover from her shocking health diagnosis. Both Gomez’s reps and her grandfather said that she was in treatment from her lupus diagnosis. But that didn’t stop TMZ from claiming that Gomez was staying at The Meadows for her alleged addiction to “alcohol, weed and Ambien.” The celebrity gossip site also claimed that she was in treatment because of her on-and-off relationship with Justin Bieber.

It was then assumed that Selena “bailed” on the alleged 45-day program at DAWN because she didn’t need it. The former Spring Breakers star was later seen attending the Sundance Film Festival and riding on a Segway with Justin in California.

But now it looks like Gomez is back and healthier than ever. Not only is she over the Biebs, but she’s also focused on releasing her highly anticipated new album, Revival. Gomez has already released her new singles “Good For You” and “Same Old Love,” along with the buzz single “Me & The Rhythm.” Earlier this week, Gomez announced to her fans that she’s having a Revival tour beginning in May with stops throughout the U.S. and Canada throughout the later part of 2016. During her interview with Billboard, Gomez revealed that she put all of her frustration with the media into her music. Gomez also claims that none of the songs have anything to do with Bieber.

The singer and actress made another shocking revelation earlier this week. Selena told Us Weekly (via the Daily Mail) on Wednesday, Oct. 7, that she sought counseling after being fat shamed over the vacation photos of her in a bikini that went viral earlier this year. Not only did she receive the vile comments on her Instagram page, but Sel also recalled the time when someone called her “fat” in front of her face.

“I’ve been working in therapy. I’d land at the airport and people would yell out, ‘You’re fat!’ It was awful.”

Gomez told the publication that this was the first time in her career that she’s ever dealt with fat shaming. She also explained the reason why she shared a photo of herself in a bikini is because she wanted to show to the world – and her fans – that’s she fine with how she looks.

“I’ve been working since I was 7. This was the first year I ever dealt with anyone talking about my body. Even if I did gain weight, I’m fine. That’s what the picture represents.”

Selena Gomez also addressed the fat-shaming comments in her new interview with Billboard magazine. She couldn’t help but let the comments get to her, which is why she decided to seek therapy. Selena also explained that posing topless on the cover of Revival was a direct hit to her online critics.

“I was in a bikini and got publicly ripped for being overweight. That was the first time I’d experienced body shaming like that. I believed some of the words they were saying. When somebody else has your self-esteem in their hands…”

The full Selena Gomez cover story will be available on Thursday, Oct. 8. Meanwhile, Gomez’s new album, Revival, is ready for release on Friday, Oct. 9. Are you looking forward to her new album? Share your thoughts below in the comments section.
