New ‘Voice’ Contestant Could Be The Next Carrie Underwood [Video]

Critics are saying that one new Voice contestant could very well be the next Carrie Underwood.

Part five of the blind auditions on Monday night’s The Voice carried a lot of disappointments, as the teams filled up and the coaches became much more selective about who they turned their chairs for. But for 16-year-old Shelby Brown, that wasn’t a problem. She took the stage singing a country version of Grace Potter and Nocturnals’ “Stars.”

Her clear tone rang out in the beginning verses of the song, but it wasn’t until Brown nailed the higher notes of the chorus that all four judges hit their buttons, almost at the same time. She finished the song to all four judges and the entire audience standing and applauding. Watch her sing and the coaches’ reactions below.

Though all four coaches put in a valiant effort to get her on the team, Blake Shelton and Adam Levine were the two major contenders for this incredible singer who has the pure tone and belting power of American Idol winner Carrie Underwood.

Adam went after her hard, starting off with flattery.

“The brilliant moments were so brilliant that I have to be part of it. I have one spot left on my team. One spot. And I couldn’t be more sure this spot on my team was made for you, Shelby. I know it!”

Blake countered back by stating, “You are made for me; we’re perfect together… I love that.”

Adam also said how he believes that Shelby has the opportunity to jump between genres, singing country when she wants but also bringing in pop and other styles. He suggested strongly that he would be the coach to help her with that.

Blake Shelton is BFFs with Adam Levine.
Singers Blake Shelton and Adam Levine keep the bromance alive.

After a lot of back and forth between Blake, Adam, and the other coaches, in which the three other coaches tried to keep Blake, the most obvious choice for this soulful country singer, from talking. Finally, Blake got out a final statement that should have won the upcoming star over.

“I’m going to buy your version of that song because that’s the one that I want… Listen, when you can just hit a huge note and just soar with it, there’s no way to learn that. You have to be born with that kind of lung capacity and that kind of pitch. And you had it perfect. I mean you had that perfectly. Boy, you’re 16! Now all you gotta do is come on my team, and let’s make you a country star. What do you say?”

But in a surprising turn of events, Shelby chose to join team Adam. He must have won her over with his words of praise and that roguish smile.

After all was said and done, Adam told the camera, “I am blown away. I think that girl is only at the very beginning of what she is capable of.”

Brown was the final member on Adam Levine’s team and the first coach to fill every slot. Soon after, Blake filled his team with Blaine Mitchell who belted out Train’s “Drops of Jupiter.”

Gwen was able to convince Summer Schappell, a 21-year-old country singer, to join her team. She sang a rendition of “Strawberry Wine,” which Blake dubbed “harder to sing than most people think.” Summer took the last spot on Gwen’s team, getting her ready for the Battle Rounds.

Pharrell was the last coach with a slot on his team, and he took his sweet time looking for the perfect candidate. He finally found it in Syndey Rhame, a 16-year-old with strong tones. Her version of Ed Sheeran’s “Photograph” got Pharrell to turn his chair as all of the other coaches peaked around their own chairs to watch the girl sing. Pharrell was over the moon with his choice, and the other coaches, though satisfied with their teams, were a little put out that they didn’t have an opportunity to turn for her.

All four of the coaches have strong teams and are ready for the Battle Rounds next week. We’ll see how Shelby Brown, the wannabe Carrie Underwood star, does when paired against one of her fellow team members.
