Toronto Mall Shooting Leaves At Least One Dead, Seven Injured

At least one person is dead and seven injured following a shooting in Toronto’s popular Eaton Centre on Saturday evening.

Yahoo News reports that the shooting took place in the food court of one of Canada’s busiest malls, and police constable Victor Kwong stated that eight people were injured, including the deceased, a 25-year-old man. Among the injured are two in critical condition, including a 13-year-old boy.

Kwong further stated that two people were trampled on in the rush to evacuate the mall after shots were fired, including a pregnant woman who went into labor after she was pushed. So far, the suspect has not been caught.

According to Yahoo News, Toronto Blue Jays player Brett Lawrie was among those who sprinted from the mall in the aftermath, while tweeting:

“People sprinting up the stairs right from where we just were… Wow wow wow.”

MSNBC reports that Marcus Neves-Polonio, 19, was working in the food court when he saw a man pull out a gun and start firing near the Big Smoke Burger. He saw one person hit directly in the chest, and two other people on the ground. He recalled ducking under a table, thinking:

“I just hoped he wouldn’t go in my direction. I easily could have been shot, too.”

Hannah Stewart, 21, a shopper at Eaton Centre, stated:

“All of a sudden a herd of people were just running toward us, a massive crowd of people screaming, running, freaking out. We saw this girl, sitting on the ground, and she had blood on her toes.”

Police have not yet apprehended the suspect, but had concluded a sweep of the mall and were in the process of reviewing security tapes on Saturday night.
