Tom Daley And Dustin Lance Black Are Engaged Two Years After Controversial Relationship Made Headlines

Tom Daley and Dustin Lance Black are engaged! According to E! Online, the announcement was made today in the marriage and births section of the Times. Here’s what it said.

“The engagement is announced between Tom, son of Robert and Debra Daley of Plymouth, and Lance, son of Jeff Bisch of Philadelphia and Anne Bisch of Lake Providence.”

There’s a 20-year age difference between the couple, although you probably couldn’t tell that by just glancing at them. Olympic diver Daley is 21, and Dustin Lance Black, Oscar-winning Milk screenwriter, is 41.

Daley and Dustin Lance Black began dating in 2013 when Daley was just 19. At the time, the news that they were dating caused some controversy because of the age gap.

Tom Daley announced to the world that he was bisexual in 2013 via a video he posted to YouTube, an article in Us Weekly reminds us.

“My life changed massively when I met someone, and they make me feel so happy, so safe and everything just feels great,” Daley said at the time. “That someone is a guy. It did take me by surprise a little bit.”

He didn’t reveal that that someone was Dustin Lance Black, although he did add, “I still fancy girls.”

Tom later went on The Jonathan Ross Show and gushed a little bit more about the love of his life. Calling the encounter with Black “love at first sight,” he gave a couple more juicy details about the first time they laid eyes on each other.

“I wrote my number and put ‘Call me’ with a wink face. I had a text in the morning. I was like, ‘Oh my God.'”

Five months after saying he was bisexual, Tom Daley came out as gay, the Daily Mail reports. Speaking on the Celebrity Juice show on ITV2, Daley confirmed the news of his sexual orientation and declared that his relationship with Dustin Lance Black was “all good.”

He also gave some more insight into why he decided to make a YouTube video to reveal the news of his relationship.

“I wanted to be able to say what I wanted say, on my own terms without anyone twisting it,” Daley said.

On the question of the age difference between Daley and Black, an alleged source close to Daley told Us Weekly that it didn’t bother him.

“Tom told friends he ‘doesn’t care what people think,'” the source said.
Another source also reportedly told Us Weekly that Lance Black wrote the script for Daley’s coming out video.

But Dustin Lance Black is no stranger to controversy, though, according to Queerty. Soon after he won the Oscar for writing Milk, video and photos of Black having unprotected sex with an ex-partner started to circulate around the internet. It was doubly embarrassing for Dustin at the time, because along with being one of the most high-profile gay men in Hollywood, he was also a campaigner for safe sex.

At the time, the tape was being promoted by Starzlife, according to an article on Queerty. Based on timestamps, the video seems to have been recorded in November 2006, a long time before Black started what would become a very successful career as a screenwriter.

Soon after the tape and the photos were released, Dustin issued a statement.

“It is unfortunate that individuals and other outside parties are trying to profit from material which is clearly private,” Lance Black said at the time. “More important than the embarrassment of this incident is the misleading message these images send. I apologize and cannot emphasize enough the importance of responsible sexual practices.”

Dustin Lance Black sex tape seemed to sour a lot of people on the Tom Daley relationship when it was announced in 2013.

According to the Mirror, Dustin Lance Black filed a ­million dollar lawsuit for invasion of privacy, and most sites took down the material.

As of this writing, there are no further details about the proposal or wedding date between Tom Daley and Dustin Lance Black.
