Eddie Montgomery: Little Information Available About Accident That Killed Country Star’s 19-Year-Old Son, Hunter
Little information is available about the accident that killed Hunter Montgomery, the 19-year-old son of country singer Eddie Montgomery (half of country duo Montgomery Gentry, along with Troy Gentry) over the weekend.
As previously reported by the Inquisitr, Hunter Montgomery, the youngest of Eddie Montgomery’s four children, died at University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital on Sunday, after having been on life support for some time following an accident.
In a statement made available via People, Eddie Montgomery confirmed his son’s death.
“My son Hunter went to heaven today. I appreciate all your prayers and love and thank you for giving us privacy as we grieve and say goodbye.”

Hunter was the youngest of Eddie Montgomery’s four children, all from his first wife, Tracy, according to Taste of Country. Eddie’s other children are his daughters, Brooke and Candace, and his oldest son, Kevin.
At the time of his death, Hunter lived a quiet life outside of the public eye. His Facebook page indicated only that he lived in Danville, Kentucky. He was engaged to Davara Little, according to Heavy, with whom he had a 1-year-old son.
Little is known about the accident that killed Hunter Montgomery — press reports do not indicate where the accident took place, when it happened, if it was a vehicle accident (or a different type of accident), or how long he had been on life support. The Lexington Herald reported that investigators are waiting for toxicology results to see if alcohol or drugs played a role in the accident, but gave little other information.
Hunter Montgomery had been in the ICU since at least Friday (September 25), based on a Facebook post made by his mother, Tracy Nuna (Eddie Montgomery’s ex-wife).
“As I sit here and watch my precious son, I can’t hold back the tears. God you are the mighty healer and I pray you spare my son. I love him and I feel so helpless. I feel like my life has just stopped. Please pray for him. Hunter Montgomery I will not accept anything less than you waking up and being with all of us again. I love you son! Please Jesus allow him to feel your presence and let him feel you walking beside him through this journey. Allow him to feel all the prayers of the wonderful people praying for him. Fight Hunter, you are a fighter!”
In 2010, according to a Country Weekly report, one of Eddie Montgomery’s sons — it’s not clear if it was Hunter or Kevin — was seriously injured in an All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV or 4-wheeler) accident. That accident would play a role in saving Eddie’s life — while at the hospital attending to his injured son, Eddie complained of pain in his hip. The doctor took an X-ray, discovered an anomaly, and ordered Eddie to see his urologist immediately. Eddie would be diagnosed with prostate cancer. Since then, he has undergone treatment and is now cancer-free.
Hunter’s death is the latest in a string of personal and professional difficulties for Eddie Montgomery. Within a period of a few months, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer, his band left Sony music, and his wife served divorce papers. He later filed personal bankruptcy after his restaurant closed.
Eddie Montgomery and his friends and family will say goodbye to Hunter at his funeral to be held Thursday at a Lexington church.
