A brutal attack in Santa Ana left an 83-year-old with serious injuries, and the disturbing incident was all caught on camera.
The attack took place early Friday morning in the 5000 block of West Edinger Avenue, ABC 7 News reported. Police said 83-year-old Tuyen Nguyen was out on his daily walk to a nearby restaurant when suddenly a suspect attacked without provocation and seeming without any reason.
The beating left the 83-year-old with a number of injuries. The sucker punch sent him crashing to the ground, and the suspect then punched and kicked him a number of times while the victim held up his arms in an attempt to defend himself.
Nguyen was sent to the hospital with a brain hemorrhage and a broken eye socket. He was listed in critical condition. Family members said he was terrified for his life.
“He was thinking about my mom, and he was afraid he was going to die,” said Pete Nguyen, the victim’s son, in an interview with ABC 7.
Pete added that they hope the suspect can be found and brought to justice before anyone else is attacked. Police said they are searching for the suspect in the Santa Ana beating.
Nguyen was already able to provide some vital clues in the case. Family members said he recognized his attacker as a transient who is sometimes seen hanging around the parking lot where the attack took place.
“What his motive was, whether he was intoxicated, on drugs, having mental issues, we don’t know because we don’t know who this individual is,” said Cpl. Anthony Bertagna of the Santa Ana Police Department. “But we don’t want it to happen to somebody else.”
It does not appear that robbery was a motive. The video does not show the attacker taking anything from the 83-year-old man, and police confirmed that the suspect did not attempt to take money or valuables.
Police are now calling on the public to help the man responsible for the attack. They have released footage of the beating including a shot of the suspect’s face just after the attack, with Nguyen still lying on the ground.
Police said the Santa Ana beating suspect is between 40 and 50-years-old, five foot 10 inches, and weighs about 160 pounds, the OC Register reported. Anyone who has information about the suspect who beat the 83-year-old man is asked to call the Santa Ana police at (714) 493-9135 or Orange County Crime Stoppers at (855) TIP-OCCS.
They may have some help in the matter. After video of the Santa Ana beating was published by a number of Los Angeles-area media outlets, the story went viral and has garnered coverage in a number of national outlets. There is now a nationwide audience helping in the search for the suspect who brutally attacked the 83-year-old man.
