‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Trading Card Reveals Potentially Major Jedi Spoiler

Potential spoilers continue to emerge in the lead-up to the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and the newest bit of information to surface has the potential to turn fans’ current understanding of the movie upside down.

[Potentially Major Spoilers Follow]

The newest piece of Star Wars information comes from a set of The Force Awakens trading cards. First noticed by Latino Review, these cards appear to be part of a tie-in game and feature symbols that categorize each character. There are symbols for Sith, Jedi, Rebels, Bounty Hunters, and a Droid Army. Setting aside that last one for a second, the image of these cards reveals Finn, Rey, and Kylo Ren, all with their matching symbols. While Finn and Rey are both identified as Rebels (which is to be expected), one glaring fact stands out: Rey is apparently a Jedi.

This fact is likely to take Star Wars fans by surprise, as promotional material in the run-up to The Force Awakens has featured Finn wielding a lightsaber, causing fans to speculate that he might be the heir to the light side of the Force. If the newest information proves true, then it seems likely that the attempt to convince Star Wars fans that Finn is a Jedi was a bit of intentional misdirection on the part of the production, as IGN points out.

The fact that Rey might be a Force user also plays into fan speculation that her character could be the offspring of Han Solo and Princess Leia. Those rumors have circulated ever since a Japanese interview in which Daisey Ridley described her character as “solitary,” eliciting laughter both from herself and Kathleen Kennedy. Much has been made of the character’s accent (Coruscanti in the Star Wars lexicon), suggesting she was placed on Jakku, instead of originating there. Abrams has also been straightforward about the fact that Rey and Finn’s last names have yet to be revealed, noting that it is entirely intentional that they remain a mystery.

It bears noting, however, that the cards in the image depict Kylo Ren as a Sith. J.J. Abrams has famously stated that the character is in fact not a Sith, but rather a member of the Knights of Ren. While the newest Star Wars villain may be identified as a Sith just for the purposes of the card game in question, fans cannot help but consider that Rey is identified as a Jedi, while Finn is not.
