‘Destiny’ Hot Fix Gives Slight Nerf To Xur’s Three Of Coins

Bungie introduced the Three of Coins to Xur’s inventory in Destiny last week. PlayStation and Xbox owners that purchased The Taken King quickly discovered the power of the using the coins to gain Exotic engrams from killing Ultra bosses. Farming methods were discovered as well, which were stopped with a new hot fix patch released to the game Thursday.

The Three of Coins is now available to purchase from Xur, Agent of the Nine, in packs of three when he visits the Tower every weekend. They only cost three Strange Coins each, but their impact to the game is tremendous as they increase the chance that an Exotic engram will drop from Ultra bosses during Strikes, missions, raids, and even patrol activities.

The effect of an individual Three of Coins is long lasting too. If a player does not receive an Exotic drop after beating an Ultra, then it still stays active and further increases the chance that the next Ultra boss kill will result in a shiny Exotic loot drop. As an example, my son’s limited play time with Destiny this past weekend resulted in no less than four Exotic drops (I forgot to pick up the coins in my rush to get other things done). Others have reported receiving many more in the Destiny Reddit group and elsewhere.

Players quickly discovered that there were ways to quickly farm certain Winter Kell Ultra bosses by killing it and themselves at the same time with a rocket launcher. This resulted in multiple Exotic drops within a relatively short time frame. This is evidently a game-breaking concern for Bungie and not how they intended for the boost item to be used. Community Manager David “Deej” Dague announced that a fix was coming not long after the farming method was discovered last Friday.

“I was just conferring with the Design Team about how Three of Coins is performing in the wild,” he wrote in the Reddit post discussing the farming technique. “It is their assessment, and yours as well, given the context of the dialogue here, that the drop rates are too damn high. For now, this will play in your favor…”

As a result, the Three of Coins received a bit of a nerf in the 2.0.0.4 to ensure they work the way they were intended. Fortunately, it doesn’t reduce their effectives when not farming.

The patch notes read: “Three of Coins now provides a smaller increase in Exotic Engram drop chance when rapidly killing Ultras.”

Destiny: The Taken King (PlayStation, Xbox)

Naturally, Bungie is not announcing the rates at which Three of Coins boost Exotic Engram drops when they are normal or when they are buffed.

The Three of Coins is not the only Destiny issue corrected with the hotfix patch. The problem with disappearing Golden Chest completions toward the Year One Moments of Triumphs has been fixed along with the “Reach Level 30” quest objective not correctly rewarding players who reached level 40 before turning it in. Additionally, the High Value Target patrols will now reward Legendary Marks and fully leveled Exotic pieces will give two Exotic Shards when dismantled.
