New ‘HBO Now’ Movies, Original Shows In October: Halloween Horror, Plus New Amy Schumer Special

The HBO Now streaming service — the only way to receive HBO without a cable or satellite subscription — announced its October 2015 lineup this week, and the selection of new movies and HBO originals is heavily skewed toward horror. Because after all, Halloween falls in October.

The highlight of Halloween night will be the 2014 hit horror sequel, The Purge: Anarchy — the second film in the ongoing series about a bizarre future America where for one night every year, all crime is legal. Even cold-blooded murder.

The Purge: Anarchy made such an impact when it hit multiplex screens last year that rumors spread throughout American cities that a real-life “purge” was about to take place. Nothing quite like the horrifying scenes depicted in the movie ever happened, but this Halloween, HBO Now premieres The Purge: Anarchy, so who knows what will happen this time around.

The October HBO Now lineup also features some older classic fright flicks, including the iconic Zombie chiller 28 Days, as well as 1999’s House on Haunted Hill — a remake of the 1959 low-budget classic about a group of people who agree to spend the night in a haunted house in exchange for a large sum of money.

In 1959 all it took was $10,000, but by the time of the 1999 remake, the price tag had risen to a cool million.

HBO Now also features that movie’s 2007 sequel, Return to House On Haunted Hill. Both movies go online on October 1.

Of course, the month features much more than a fright fest. A brand new stand-up comedy special from the hottest comic of the year, Amy Schumer, debuts on October 17, and Season Two of the surreal drama The Leftovers premieres on October 4.

The HBO Now Saturday night movie lineup includes the Will Smith con-man thriller Focus debuting on October 10, and the Clint Eastwood-directed American Sniper, with its Oscar-nominated performance by Bradley Cooper, on October 3.
