WWE News: Several Top Superstars Seen As Stale — Why Is WWE Concerned With Their Future?

The WWE is concerned with its future as the company reportedly views several of its top superstars as stale, while numerous young stars are stuck in midcard limbo, according to Daily Wrestling News.

As the company heads for their Hell in a Cell pay-per-view next month, the company will feature Brock Lesnar vs. The Undertaker in a Hell in a Cell match — a bout that will likely main event the show. Since both Lesnar and Undertaker are only part-time performers, the WWE is concerned with how they will be able to keep fans interested without needing to rely upon their seldom-seen big names.

For starters, the report indicates that the company views top stars such as Randy Orton, The Big Show, and Sheamus as “stale.” The company feels like these particular superstars are being forced onto their audience. Therefore, the audience is quickly tuning out and losing any interest in them.

The Randy Orton vs. Sheamus feud has been one of the most repeated things on WWE television in recent years. Between their several encounters on Monday Night RAW, SmackDown, and pay-per-view, these two have squared off enough times to put together a three-disc DVD set. In fact, these two just settled their latest feud, in which they wrestled at Battleground and SummerSlam.

In Big Show’s case, “The Giant” has been a mainstay on WWE television for years, but a lack of a defined role is likely the reason for the fans’ lack of interest. While Big Show is a decorated performer, he is constantly switching between a good guy and bad guy role, and rarely wins any matches.

A solution to the stale part of the roster may be within the WWE’s younger core of superstars. Daily News Wrestling mentions stars who have been on the roster for several years, including Cesaro, Bray Wyatt, Dean Ambrose, and Roman Reigns. While all of those competitors have enjoyed some type of success, they’ve generally been relegated to midcard duty.

Cesaro has consistently delivered some of best in-ring work in the company, and the face of WWE, John Cena has reportedly talked him up to management, trying to get him used more prominently. So far, to no avail.

Wyatt has been involved in some big storylines during his two-year tenure on the main roster. Two of the bigger storylines saw him face Cena and Undertaker at consecutive Wrestlemania’s. But just as quickly as he began to rise, he faded back into midcard limbo.

As for Reigns and Ambrose, the former Shield members are now tag team partners. The company seemed to be behind Reigns as their next top babyface, but forcing him onto the fans earlier this year backfired. In Ambrose’s case, “The Lunatic Fringe” is popular among fans but is reportedly not seen as a main eventer, as previously reported by Wrestling Inc.

When partnered with recent rumors of WWE panicking over low ratings recently, the company will likely have to change something because if they think the product is stale, you can only imagine how the fans feel.
