Mack Breed: John Jay Assistant Coach Reportedly Admits He Directed Players To Attack Referee, Claims Ref Used N-Word

Coach Mack Breed of John Jay High School has reportedly admitted that he is the one responsible for a brutal attack on a referee earlier this month.

Video showed two football players spearing the referee from behind at the tail end of a high school game. John Jay was losing to Marble Falls and had just suffered a series of what the John Jay players believed to be bad calls, the Associated Press reported.

Footage of the attack went viral, leading to calls for criminal charges against the players and for the school to be banned from playing the rest of the season.

But now Mack Breed, an assistant coach at John Jay High School, is shedding more light on the incident, allegedly saying that the players did not decide to attack the referee on their own and that the attack was not unprovoked.

In a statement about the incident, John Jay High School principal Robert Harris said that Breed “directed the students to make the referee pay for his racial comments and calls.” The players, 17-year-old Michael Moreno and 15-year-old Victor Rojas, are facing a disciplinary hearing.

There appears to be support for the allegations against the referee. Outside the Lines spoke to four John Jay players who confirmed that the referee used the N-word twice during the game. Watts denies using any racist remarks.

As Harris wrote, Mack Breed admitted that he was the one who told the players to attack the referee.

“I later met with Coach Breed at John Jay High School… in my office in the presence of Coach Gutierrez,” Harris wrote. “Coach Breed told me that he directed the students to make the referee pay for his racial comments and calls. He wanted to take full responsibility for his actions. Mr. Breed at one point during our conversation stated that he should have handled the referee himself.”

The players confirmed that it was Mack Breed who told them to attack the referee. Both have been kicked out of John Jay High School and are attending an alternative school. They have also been barred from the team, and are not allowed to even watch games as spectators.

Mack Breed has not admitted publicly to ordering the John Jay players to attack the referee, and has not offered any comment on the incident. He faces his own hearing with the University Interscholastic League on Thursday, and could be banned from coaching.
