‘Fear The Walking Dead’ Drops In Ratings Again, But So Does The Emmys

Well, ratings have dipped yet again for AMC’s latest zombie apocalypse series, Fear The Walking Dead. Could it be a trend that will see the demise of the popular franchise — or is latest branch of it, at least? Perhaps not, after all, even the Emmys had a rough time drawing in viewers on Sunday.

Carter Matt has stated that Fear The Walking Dead pulled in 6.6 million viewers on Sunday night. A decent draw by any standards except its own. The pilot episode of Fear The Walking Dead managed to pull in 10.1 million viewers and smashed cable records as a result. As each week passes though, Fear has consistently lost viewers by as much as 19 percent per episode. Now it is coming dangerously close to losing nearly half of its original viewers, a dangerous place to be as the show is nearing the end of its first season, although AMC has confidence in the franchise and had already renewed Fear The Walking Dead for an extended 15-episode season 2 before season 1 had even aired.

Walking Dead fans have been complaining about a lack of action, and in last Sunday’s episode especially, a lack of zombies. But others are content with the slow burn feel to the show and know that zombies are something that are destined to arrive anyway so they may as well sit back and enjoy the journey.

However, it seems, for the Emmys, they are blaming their lack of viewers on the success of the zombie series. According to Vulture, only 11.9 million viewers tuned in to watch the Emmys, its lowest pull ever and down 4 million viewers from last year’s event. Vulture cited that the Emmys had to go up against not only Fear The Walking Dead, but a prime-time football game on NBC as well.

Considering AMC’s The Walking Dead has notoriously been snubbed by the Emmys, hearing this news is probably music to their ears. Even Fansided suggested (albeit tongue in cheek) that perhaps AMC put Fear up against the Emmys in an effort to snub them right back.

So far, Fear The Walking Dead has had a reason to account for each viewership drop, but it will be interesting to see if next Sunday’s episode will fare any better. Only time will tell.

Fear The Walking Dead returns to AMC with Episode 5 (entitled “Cobalt”) on Sunday, September 27, 2015.
