Sean Penn and his daughter Dylan attended Madonna's Madison Square Garden concert last Thursday, and the Oscar winner enjoyed the show so much that he sent his ex-wife a congratulatory note afterwards. Penn's note to Madonna expressed how he "finally appreciates" her art, some thirty years after they were married. The singer gushed about it during her Rebel Heart tour stop at the Barclays Centre in Brooklyn on Saturday, Yahoo 7 news reports.
"I did a show at Madison Square Garden the other night if you heard about it. And my ex-husband was there! Could you imagine?," Madonna told the audience. "He had been at my show 30 years earlier when I was at Madison Square Garden, and he was very upset with me for wearing a costume that was too revealing. That's not a lie!"
"Anyway, after the show he wrote me a letter and said he finally appreciates my art. And that is what I have to say about marriage, OK? Thirty f**king years later."
Check out the video below of Madonna telling the crowd about Sean's reaction.
"She [Dylan] had never met Madonna before, but Madonna was really sweet to her," a source told Us Weekly. "Madonna and Sean have stayed close friends over the years, so of course she embraced Dylan."
Despite their divorce, the former couple remained close friends over the years.
"I'm very friendly with my first ex-wife," Penn said in an interview for Esquire U.K.'s March issue.
Madonna and Penn were married for four years before divorcing in 1989. Their relationship was tumultuous and under intense scrutiny of the press, with Sean often having bust-ups with paparazzi that resulted in his arrest. There was also a notable incident at their Malibu home which caused Madonna to allegedly call the police on him. They have both since gone on to have high-profile relationships. Madonna was married to director Guy Ritchie for seven years, with whom she shares a son, Rocco, 15, while Sean was married to actress Robin Wright until a 2010 divorce. They have two sons, Dylan, 24, and Hopper, 22.
Penn most recently dated Charlize Theron for nearly two years, before the actress reportedly called off their engagement in June. Sean was rumored to be hooking back up with his ex Robin after her break-up with actor Ben Foster earlier this year.
In related news, Penn is suing Empire series creator Lee Daniels for $10 million, claiming the award-winning producer slandered him by accusing him of hitting women, just to make Terrence Howard look better, as a previous Inquisitr article reports. You can read Sean Penn's complaint in full here.
