British Housewife Caught With $2.6 Million Of Cocaine, Could Face Death Penalty

British housewife, Lindsay Sandiford, 55, may face the death penalty in Indonesia after more than $2.6 million US worth of cocaine was found stuffed in the lining of her suitcase when she arrived at a Bali airport.

The Huffington Post reports that, following her arrest, she agreed to take part in a sting operation that ended with the arrests of another British woman, two British men and an Indian man.

According to The Jakarta Post, Customs and Excise Agency monitoring division head, Made Wijaya, stated of Sandiford’s arrest that:

“We first spotted the cocaine through routine X-Ray scanning.”

Wijaya further stated that:

“Right now both of them, Sandiford and her suspected partner, have been delivered to the local police for further questioning.”

Sandiford maintains that she is innocent in the drug trafficking ring, and that the only reason she agreed to fly the cocaine to Bali, an Indonesian island, was because her children at home were being threatened. A neighbor from her former hone in Gloucestershire disagrees, however. He told the London Evening Standard that

“She was a real neighbour from hell. She gives off the impression that she’s a well-to-do, but she’s not at all. It doesn’t surprise me that she’s been arrested.”

Mulyadi, the Police spokesman, stated of the operation to bring in the other four suspects that:

“For over a week, we conducted a controlled drug delivery through the suspect, Sandiford, to uncover a drug ring. Four Britons, including Sandiford, and one Indian citizen were arrested.”

The London Evening Standard reports that Wijaya explained after officials cut open the brown packages and weighed the white substance inside that:

“After weighing, the total cocaine is 4.791kg. This is a big international network. The charge against them would carry the death penalty.”

In Indonesia, the death penalty means facing a firing squad.
