Kate Snow Named Anchor Of ‘NBC Nightly News’ On Sunday Nights

Kate Snow will anchor NBC’s Sunday-night broadcast of NBC Nightly News, as well as anchor a two-hour weekday news broadcast on MSNBC, Yahoo News reports.

In addition to anchoring NBC Nightly News on Sunday nights, Snow will have additional duties hosting a two-hour block of news programming on weekday afternoons, from 3 to 5 p.m. Eastern Time, on MSNBC. In a statement via MSN, NBC News President Deborah Turness has praised Snow’s skill as a journalist and her rapport with viewers.

“Kate is a compassionate storyteller who approaches every assignment with equal parts determination and heart. Her broad range as a journalist, skill as an anchor, and familiarity with our audience is sure to lead ‘Nightly’ to continued success on Sundays.”

Snow’s appointment comes amid something of a shakeup at MSNBC, where the traditionally liberal cable channel — which has pulled in a fraction of the ratings of its main partisan competitor, conservative Fox News — is changing its focus from opinion to news, under the leadership of Andy Lack. The move is designed to “reintegrate” MSNBC and NBC News into one product, with MSNBC being an “arm” of NBC News.

While Snow moves in at MSNBC, other mainstays of the channel — shows by liberal hosts like Al Sharpton, Alex Wagner, Ronan Farrow, and Ed Schultz — will be moving out. In their place will be daytime shows that include Snow’s, as well as news broadcasts anchored by Andrea Mitchell, Thomas Roberts, and Tamron Hall. Popular evening shows by left-leaning evening hosts like Chris Matthews, Chris Hayes, Rachel Maddow and Lawrence O’Donnell, will remain.

Filling in, as the need arises, will be Brian Williams.

Since news broke earlier this year that Williams misled viewers about his role in various news stories, including the Iraq War, he’s been something of a hot potato within NBC’s News Division. During his six-month suspension, Lester Holt filled in as the weeknight anchor of NBC Nightly News, a job he was officially given earlier this summer. NBC, however, seemingly not wanting to drop a bankable news anchor, transferred Williams to reporting duties at MSNBC. Beginning next week, Williams will be providing coverage of Pope Francis’ visit to the United States.

Kate Snow’s new show on MSNBC will begin on October 4.
