If you win tonight’s $15 million jackpot, you will have to choose between a one-time lump sum payment or a 30-year annuity. USA Mega reports that the lump sum payment is based on the cash value of the jackpot which is currently $9.2 million. A potential winner would receive approximately $6.9 million after federal taxes, but before state taxes are deducted.

According to the official Mega Millions site, one lucky lottery player in New York matched all six numbers in the last drawing on September 11 (5-11-31-50-67, MB 14) and won the $106 million jackpot. This is the third time this year that someone from New York won the Mega Millions jackpot, with $126 million given away on February 27 and $58 million awarded to one winner on March 24.

If the winner chooses a 30-year annuity, they would get 30 average annual payments of $500,000 before taxes. The first payment is issued shortly after the winning ticket is verified by lottery officials.

The Mega Millions lottery got its start in 1996 as the Big Game. It was initially offered in six states —Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, and Virginia. The popular lottery game has grown over the years with Mega Millions tickets now sold at lottery retailers in 44 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Mega Millions drawings take place every Tuesday and Friday night at 11 p.m. ET.

Tickets cost $1 each and players can pay an extra $1 for the Megaplier option. This feature doubles all non-jackpot prizes up to five times the amount of the prize. Non-jackpot prizes range from $1 for matching just the Mega Ball to $1 million for matching all five white balls but not the Mega Ball.

In other lottery news, there was no jackpot winner in last Saturday’s Powerball drawing (2 -3 – 13 – 16 – 35, PB 27), so the grand prize is now an estimated $185 million with a cash value of $116.8 million. The next drawing is Wednesday, September 16, at 10:59 p.m. ET. Powerball tickets ($2 each) are currently sold in 44 states; Washington, D.C.; Puerto Rico; and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
