‘The Bastard Executioner’ Spoilers: What Can Viewers Expect As Kurt Sutter’s New Show Begins?

Kurt Sutter fans finally get to sink their teeth into his new show, The Bastard Executioner, with Tuesday night’s premiere on FX. There have been plenty of rumblings about what to expect with this new outing, and Sutter’s Sons of Anarchy fans can’t wait to get started. What Bastard Executioner spoilers are available for the September 15 premiere, and the first season of the show as a whole?

Fans already know some of the basics regarding Kurt Sutter’s new FX outing. The show is set in the 14th century, and the storyline revolves around one of King Edward I’s knights. The knight vows to stop fighting after being broken by war, but he’s pulled back into action again when he finds he needs to seek vengeance.

As the Hollywood Reporter details, Tuesday’s premiere essentially puts the first two episodes together for a two-part pilot. A show with this type of setting is a first for FX, but it sounds as if Sutter’s Sons of Anarchy fans are ready to give this big shift a shot. It seems this is a very large story and lengthy journey, so fans will need to embrace a long and twisting ride.

Despite this being teased as an epic journey, Bastard Executioner spoilers indicate that things get off to a fast start, and fans will quickly be hooked. There are complex battle scenes and the show lead, Lee Jones, in the role of Wilkin Brattle, seemingly will draw viewers in from the very start.

Many are expecting this to be a very bloody and gory show, given the setting and involvement of Sutter. It seems that there definitely is plenty of violence and blood, and the squeamish may want to brace themselves. From the sounds of things, very little is off the table in terms of the violence ahead.

The Bastard Executioner spoilers tease that Wilkin will work to stay away from battle as the season begins. After something brutal happens, he’ll change his identity to lead a dual life as he is pulled back into the violent work he had tried to leave behind. TV Guide adds that Brattle initially stops fighting after receiving a divine message. He tries farming, but a rebellion pulls him back into action.

When a rebellion goes awry, and somehow Brattle is mistaken as someone else, he seemingly has no choice but to embrace the violence again to maintain his cover. Sagal plays his closest ally, but there are others who know his secret and may force him into problematic situations for their own gain.

As much as fans love Sutter and his style, and similarities to Sons of Anarchy will be sought out, this is said to be a very different kind of show and story. However, there will be a long, arching mythology around Brattle, and the character will face a somewhat similar emotional and mental journey compared to the character of Jax Teller on SOA. It seems that conflict between loyalty to family and outside pressures and influences will be core to Brattle’s journey, much as it was for Teller.

Family is said to be key in this series, and viewers will need to be prepared for a slow pace of storytelling. That complaint came up often in the last few seasons of SOA, and apparently, viewers should be prepared for that from the beginning of Bastard Executioner. However, from the sounds of things, the patience invested early on will most definitely pay off as the series continues.

There’s little doubt that the Bastard Executioner premiere will be huge for FX, given Kurt Sutter’s involvement, along with stars like Katey Sagal and Stephen Moyer being in the cast. The setting may be new for carryover SOA fans and traditional FX viewers, but given the popularity of shows like Game of Thrones, it may not be too much of a stretch to expect fans to embrace this one.

Will The Bastard Executioner be FX’s next huge hit? From the sounds of things, people will definitely be buzzing after Tuesday’s premiere, and many expect this one to be a wild and intriguing ride.
