El Chapo Guzman is a man who knows how to go invisible, bribe, and thrive right under the authorities’ noses. Having begun dealing in drugs at a very young age, creativity has been El Chapo’s main savior, as he strives to ensure that his Sinaloa cartel maintains its position as the biggest drug trafficker into the United States. Some of the ingenious methods that his cartel uses to smuggle the drugs into the country include planes, catapults, and tunnels.
According to a DEA agent who spoke to the NY Times, the catapult is historically, one of the most inexpensive means used. The following was his statement in regards to this.
“They erect this fence, only to go out there a few days later and discover that these guys have a catapult, and they’re flinging hundred-pound bales of marijuana over to the other side. A catapult… We’ve got the best fence money can buy, and they counter us with a 2,500-year-old technology.”
However, it is his Sinaloa cartel’s knowledge of building trafficking tunnels across the U.S – Mexico border that proved useful in breaking him out of a maximum prison in July this year. Spanning 1.5 kilometers in length, El Chapo’s escape tunnel ran from a secluded section of his cell to an unfinished building in the middle of a field outside the prison.
However, it is unlikely that El Chapo will run away from both the Mexican and American authorities for long. This is as stated by Jhon Jairo Velásquez Vásquez, otherwise known as Popeye, who was at one time the chief of assassins for the infamous drug trafficker, Pablo Escobar.
According to Business Insider, the former cartel member said on an interview with the Latino Proceso magazine that El Chapo is bound to be caught in just 16 to 18 months. He also talked about the scenario that El Chapo is currently looking at. The following was the statement.
“He knows he has to be killed, because if they capture him alive, they will extradite him to the US. And he will not tolerate a high-security prison in the US. There the food they give [is eaten with] a straw, breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Nobody talks to you; there is no human contact. If somebody sends you a letter, they show it to you on a television screen.”
But El Chapo runs a well oiled machine and his lawyers already knew this from the beginning. As such, his lawyer Juan Pablo Badillo quickly sought to eliminate this danger as soon as El Chapo escaped. According to FoxNews Latino, a government document relating to the case indicates that authorities and officials in the country are barred from killing, torturing or extraditing the kingpin if captured. This is following a court order obtained by his lawyer.
