Smash News: Characters Dev and Ellis Not Returning

Those who watch Smash every Monday night will be tuning into the show in 2013 with two less characters at the start of the season. It was revealed today that Dev played by Raza Jaffrey and Ellis played by Jaime Cepero will no longer be on the NBC hit show.

Over the course of its first season the character of Dev has been problematic with his lack of character development, with left field story lines that involved the loyal supporting boyfriend of Karen (Katharine McPhee) cheating on her at the run of the season’s end with her Broadway and Marilyn Monroe nemesis. As for Elias fans couldn’t stand the character who always seemed to be lurking behind a closed door. Eventually his character became less of a villain and more of a nuisance than anything else.

According to sources “It’s possible one or both actors could appear in an episode or two to wrap up their story lines, but that’s it. The plan is to have neither character as a recurring presence in the show’s new-and-improved second season.”

This change comes with the previous show runner Theresa Rebeck leaving after the production’s end in March, citing a vague “it’s time to do some other stuff” to Vulture. Gossip Girl’s show runner Josh Safran has stepped up to the plate to run the show, and is rebuilding it from the ground up, promising for an improved return once the Sophomore season starts back up January of 2013.

Are you excited about the changes being made to Smash or are you worried this will change the show?
