‘Sons Of Anarchy’ Spinoff Could Feature The Return Of Iconic Characters, Confirms Kurt Sutter

Sons of Anarchy fans may well have resigned themselves to the fact that the iconic characters they so loved during the seven seasons of the show might never grace their TV screens again, but if show creator Kurt Sutter is to be believed, a Sons of Anarchy prequel remains not only a possibility in the future, but it could feature some of our favorite characters.

In August, Entertainment Weekly broke the exclusive news that Kurt Sutter had held “preliminary talks” with producers regarding the development of a new show based on the Mayans, a Mexican motorcycle gang from North California. But while the news was met with some cynicism by fans, now Sutter has revealed an intriguing detail about the probable Sons of Anarchy spinoff, which may go a long way in confirming suspicions that a prequel is well and truly on its way.

The first piece of news is that the prequel will not actually be a prequel. Kurt Sutter, who is currently busy promoting his blood-soaked medieval drama The Bastard Executioner, has confirmed that the mooted Sons of Anarchy spinoff will be a contemporary story — not a foundation tale — and could include some characters from the original series. Speaking to Deadline, the showrunner admitted that he would be more interested in examining the impact of the Hispanic diaspora within the mythologized subculture that informed Sons of Anarchy.

“It’s the same [biker] subculture, but it’d be interesting to see the influences of [Hispanic] culture and how it impacts the subculture we already understand. I would do a contemporary piece, not a prequel, and place it far enough away from Northern California that it wouldn’t step on the mythology that’s already been told. It doesn’t mean that there couldn’t be some cool, ironic crossovers with familiar characters as the series progressed. I wouldn’t want to set it too close to the world we already know, and step on that… My intent is, over the hiatus I’ll initiate a script for the pilot and take it from there.”

Although a Sons of Anarchy spinoff remains a likely possibility, Sutter emphasized that his attempt will be at fabricating a new mythology for the spinoff. Even more interesting is the fact that Sutter does not intend to write the series himself, conceding that any mythology he might build — being a white guy from New Jersey — is prone to misjudgments and contortions of cultural facts.

“Whoever I hire to write that show is going to know the culture. I wouldn’t necessarily even feel comfortable running a show like that, being a white guy from New Jersey. I really want to bring somebody I can guide with what I know, letting them put their life, family and cultural experience to add layers that I can’t provide.”

We would really look forward to that.

For the time being, however, Sons of Anarchy fans will have to content themselves with Sutter’s next offering, The Bastard Executioner, which premieres on September 15.
