Third-Person MOBA ‘Smite’ Now Available On Steam

Smite, the third-person MOBA from Hi-Rez Studios, is now available to download on Steam. The free-to-play game has had over 10 million players try it after being offered directly through its developer, but it is sure to reach even more players over the Steam platform. After all, Steam is home to over 125 million players with over six million concurrent players online right now.

Developers announced the option to download Smite from Steam on the game’s official website on Tuesday. A few details were mentioned which are worth noting for new or existing players looking to play Smite through Steam. Players will still need a Hi-Rez account to play and existing players can, of course, use their existing credentials. Downloading and using Smite through Steam really changes nothing for players and all PC players will share a community.

Additional benefits to users playing Smite through Steam include access to the Steam Overlay, Steam achievements, and Steam Wallet. According to the Smite forums FAQ, players accessing the game via Steam will still be able to use Curse as well. With its availability on Steam, Smite players will use the Steam Wallet for purchases, instead of going through the Hi-Rez website, and Steam bundles and packs will be available. In fact, there is already a sale on the Ultimate God Pack — normally $30 — for $20 until September 15. This pack includes and unlocks all current and future heroes for use within the game.

Smite, as a multiplayer online battle arena game, is a popular eSport with a non-traditional point of view. Instead of an isometric view like those found in DOTA 2 or League of Legends, Smite features a third-person perspective. Players are drawn in quickly to the action and act as a part of the intense combat rather than viewing it from above.

The heroes players can play as include a number of gods based in mythology including iconic legends like Ares, Ra, Zeus, and many more. Gods from Hindu, Egyptian, Mayan, Norse, Chinese, Greek, and Roman cultures are featured with over 60 heroes for players to choose from before starting a match. Each god has different powers and unique combat techniques to master in one of five combat roles.

Smite originally launched in March 2014 and just recently became available on Xbox One. Have you tried Smite yet, or do you plan on trying it now that it is available via Steam and Xbox One?
