Selfie Stick Fails: Man Records His Own Car Wreck While Trying To Take A Selfie

The selfie stick has earned a bad reputation for being one of the most obnoxious items you can use in a public place. Many venues and arenas have prohibited guests from using a selfie stick to keep from disrupting other customers. But the worst way that a selfie stick can distract you is while driving, as one man in a Jeep learned the hard way.

In the video above shared by the Huffington Post, you can watch YouTube user Alex Lopatnyuk trying to take a picture of himself by holding a selfie stick out the window of his Jeep — while driving on an open road. As you might imagine, things don’t turn out well for Alex. He’s so preoccupied with his selfie stick that he fails to notice the white pickup truck coming in fast in front of him. Lopatnyuk rear-ends the other driver, completely crushing a canoe stashed in the trailer and impaling his own windshield.

Despite the fact that two passengers of the white pickup were standing up in the back trailer, nobody was hurt in the selfie stick crash, but things could have been much worse. If the canoe had been pointing a little further to the right–or if it had been a little more structurally sound, the Jeep driver may have taken his last selfie that day.

In the video, Alex also shares the aftermath of the selfie stick crash. The Jeep didn’t sustain much damage aside from the shattered windshield. But no information about the state of the pickup truck was given. It does appear that Lopatnyuk knew the people he rear-ended and was planning on hunting alligators in the river with them, based on the video description.

“Gator hunting First time GoPro selfie and FAIL Before and After Vid,” it says.

This isn’t the only time selfie sticks have captured a car wreck on film. In the video below, you can see a group of four friends singing along to the radio and recording themselves with a selfie stick when one of their tires explode.
