Ellen Pompeo is really annoyed with fans of Grey’s Anatomy, and won’t keep her feelings to herself anymore. She is expressing herself in the press that she doesn’t understand why fans think she can’t carry the show without partners like Dr. Derek Shepherd or Dr. Cristina Yang the way the character of Olivia Pope carries Scandal, or Annalise Keating carries How To Get Away With Murder.
Aside from a petition that begged Grey’s Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes to bring back McDreamy, fans have been eager to see the return of Sandra Oh’s character, Dr. Cristina Yang, return to Grey-Sloan Memorial to pick up the slack, as reported by the Inquisitr. When Oh departed, the door was left wide open for Cristina Yang to return to the series, even if just for a few episodes, but Pompeo’s attitude about being the only lead on the show could put this in jeopardy.
According to International Business Times, Pompeo is attributing much of the questions of fans to sexism, yet that would not explain how Scandal and HTGAWM go on with just a female lead.
“All of a sudden, Patrick leaves, and it’s like, ‘Oh my God, Meredith’s gonna get killed with Alzheimer’s!’ ” the actress said of the viewer’s response. “The show couldn’t possibly go on without the man!”
Pompeo acknowledges that all of this has been difficult for her ego, yet many of the doubts about Pompeo/Meredith’s future with the show could be about her contract ending this year, according to the Inquisitr. This is the reason that fans have been making the leap towards Meredith’s demise, perhaps through Alzheimer’s Disease, leaving the rest of the ensemble cast to carry on.
But according to Us Weekly, Pompeo is still vying for that place in the spotlight all alone.
“Annalise Keating carries [How to Get Away With Murder], Olivia Pope carries [Scandal]. But somehow, Meredith Grey needs someone,” Pompeo, 45, complained in the new Entertainment Weekly about how people seem to perceive her character. “Why can’t I just be the lead of the show the way Annalise and Olivia can? Why can’t I be on that poster by myself?”
