Dex Osama was murdered on Monday, with police saying the Detroit rapper was killed when an argument in a strip club turned into a deadly shooting.
The rapper was killed in the early morning hours after reportedly getting into an altercation in the club, Fox 2 Detroit reported. The fight spilled out onto the street, where shots were fired. Dex Osama was killed and another man was shot in the elbow, but his injuries are described as non life-threatening.
Dex Osama was shot twice, and was helped by a bystander.
“‘Please, help me, am I going to die,’ I said you are all right. Breathe, take deep breaths,'” Jamal Sareini told Fox 2 Detroit. “I got the bleeding stopped.”
The Detroit rapper was close to breaking through in the music industry. After gaining a strong following, his work caught the ear of rapper Meek Mill.
Friends and collaborators said Dex Osama had a unique style and was close to a breakthrough.
“He would say ‘E I got something for you,'” said his friend Erik Thomas, who helped produce many of Dex Osama’s music videos. “The next thing you knew Nicki Minaj was listening to his work, it was quite the accomplishment.”
“He had his own star he was in his own lane,” Thomas added. “He didn’t copy anybody he was unique. A lot of people thought he sounded like Biggie (Smalls). He was different, he was unique.”
Dex Osama seemed to predict his violent death in his rap lyrics. He rapped often about being a target and fearing for his life. In the song “Death On Me,” he rapped:
“These n****s want me dead n***a
They put money on my head
They put money on my mind”
Meek Mill had just signed Dex Osama, and on Monday morning posted a picture on Instagram remembering him.
This is not the first rapper connected to Meek Mill to be killed in a shooting. In 2013, Meek Mill’s 18-year-old protege Lil Snupe was murdered in a dispute over a video game.
Afterward, Meek Mill was despondent, saying that he tried to keep the teenager off the streets.
“R.I.P 2 my lil f—ing ni–a #lilsnupe I tried everything in my power 2 get that kid out of the streets!” Meek wrote in a tweet he would later delete.
Police have not yet released further details in the murder of Dex Osama. The suspect remains at large.
