A U.S. Open Squirrel Seems To Think He’s A Ballboy [Video]

A squirrel at the U.S. Open seems to think he’s a ballboy.

The squirrel interrupted the early rounds of play on Sunday at the U.S. Open by frolicking on the court during a doubles match.

According to CBS Sports, the squirrel’s antics came as a welcome interruption as the play has been fairly uneventful, with the favorites rolling so far in Round 4 in the singles matches.

The squirrel provided some much-needed excitement on Court 5 when it scurried onto the court and frantically ran around before bailing over the wall and into the stands.

One has to wonder if the squirrel lives in the stadium. Today reported Monday that Martha Stewart posted an Instagram video of a squirrel running around in the stands a few days before.

The squirrel made his appearance on the court during a match between Jelena Jankovic/Aleksandra Krunic and Casey Dellacqua/Yaroslava Shvedova. The match was delayed while the grounds crew attempted to corral the feisty little rodent.

Play continued and Dellacqua and Shvedova, who are seeded fourth, went on to win 2-6, 7-5, 7-5.

Meanwhile, advancing into the U.S. Open men’s quarterfinals is No. 1 Novak Djokovic, who will play his 26th straight major quarterfinal after a hard-fought victory over Roberto Bautista Agut at the U.S. Open. He will meet Feliciano Lopez, who has reached the U.S. Open quarterfinals for the first time at age 33, according to the Associated Press.

Defending champion Marin Cilic overcame a tweaked right ankle thanks in large part to 23 aces and returned to the U.S. Open quarterfinals with a 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (2), 6-1 victory over 27th-seeded Jeremy Chardy of France. He will meet Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France, who has yet to drop a set or lose his serve through four rounds. He beat countryman Benoit Paire 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 in one hour, 42 minutes Sunday to set up a quarterfinal meeting with Cilic.

Fox Carolina reports Kristina Mladenovic, who had never been past the third round at a major before this week, is into the quarterfinals at the U.S. Open. Mladenovic next faces 43rd-ranked Roberta Vinci, who advanced without playing a point when 25th-seeded Eugene Bouchard withdrew from their fourth-round match Sunday after sustaining a concussion when she slipped and fell in the locker room Friday.

Serena and Vanessa Williams will meet to battle it out in the other quarterfinals round.

Will the U.S. Open squirrel make an appearance at the quarterfinals?
