Meet Ethan Imboden: The Steve Jobs Of Sex Toys [NSFW] [VIDEO]

Meet Ethan Imboden, the Steve Jobs of Sex Toys. Imboden, a forty year old designer with degrees in industrial design and electrical engineering from John Hopkins and Pratt, has decided, through his sex toy company JimmyJane, to bring the same sense of aesthetics and good design to the sex industry that Steve Jobs and Jony Ive brought to the world of computing appliances.

He wants to make sex toys a classier than Lindsey Lohan Fleshlights and flavored undies.

Attending a sex toy convention, the designer realized that this gigantic market, $1.3 billion per annum, was just glutted with badly designed shlock and that people would pay good money for high quality items with which to pleasure themselves and their partners.

“As soon as I saw past the fact that in front of me happened to be two penises fused together at the base, I realized that I was looking at the only category of consumer product that had yet to be touched by design,” he said. “It’s as if the only food that had been available was in the candy aisle, like Dum Dums and Twizzlers, where it’s really just about a marketing concept and a quick rush and very little emphasis on nourishment and real enjoyment. The category had been isolated by the taboo that surrounded it. I figured, I can transcend that.”

According to Jezebel, Imboden aims for a day in which purchasing a vibrator will be “as boring as buying an iPod.”

“Imboden,” the site reported, “realized that the people who buy vibrators are the same people who buy the newest sleek phones and other design-heavy gadgets. They spend money, they care about how things are made, but they’d been buying crap for so long because it was still considered taboo, and there wasn’t a vocal group of consumers demanding something better.”

His idea? To sell well crafted toys made out of high quality materials and shipped in “low-key, white packaging (a la iPhones) and need not look like throbbing penises or wild ‘n’ crazy contraptions.”

He is also all about “changing the conversation” by, as he put it, “Insinuating beautifully designed and thoughtfully engineered sex toys into the mainstream consumer landscape” in order to “push Americans into more comfortable territory around sex in general.”

Seems like he is getting there. You can now buy his products at the Sharper Image.
