Tim Tebow Gets Te-Bounced: Why Did The Philadelphia Eagles Let Him Go? [Video]

There will be no “Tebow Time” in Philadelphia, as it was announced by the team on Saturday that Tim Tebow failed to make the final cut. Fans of the 28-year-old quarterback were confident he had done enough, and after rival Matt Barkley traded to Arizona on Friday, it seemed everything was in Tim’s favor.

Unfortunately for Tebow and his supporters, it just wasn’t meant to be.

According to the Associated Press, Eagles coach Chip Kelly readily acknowledged that Tim Tebow improved over the course of preseason training and play. However, he didn’t feel that Tebow “was good enough to be the (No.) 3 right now.” This outcome marks the second time that Tim has been cut by a National Football League team in three years.

“Good enough” might not be a satisfying enough description for Tim Tebow’s fans, especially following an impressive performance during his final preseason game for Philly against the New York Jets (which was actually the last team to cut him). In the search for answers, a theory has emerged as to why Tim Tebow didn’t make the cut — and probably won’t make it in the NFL.

A piece penned by Mike Freeman for Bleacher Report summed up the struggle of Tim Tebow in a decidedly blunt manner. Freeman wrote that “the idea of Tim Tebow was always better than the reality of Tim Tebow”.

The idea of Tebow: Captain America in cleats… a football savior… he throws spirals and emotes hope… a cure… a phenomenon… a man who could turn around any franchise.

[…]

The reality of Tebow: slow, plodding even… mostly inaccurate passer… overblown as a multifaceted threat… or even a two-point threat because a restricted space like a two-point conversion requires quick thinking, accurate throwing and foot speed—he has none of those.

Tim Tebow has a strong following because he seems to represent the highest ideals associated with professional football, along with an All-American look and attitude. It’s just that his skills don’t appear to mesh with the needs of certain NFL teams.

If it’s any consolation to Tebow fans, he was far from the only person left without a job on Saturday. In all, 700 players were let go as teams trimmed their 70-person squads to just 53 ahead of regular season action.

Despite the focus on Tim Tebow, the real Cinderella story of the preseason is that of 27-year-old Jarryd Hayne. Hayne, a professional Australian rugby league player, took a serious pay cut to come to the NFL and play for the San Francisco 49ers. The 49ers announced on Saturday that Hayne had survived the final cuts, going further than many initially anticipated.

As for Tim Tebow, perhaps the third time will be the charm, and at some point, he’ll find a home in the NFL.
